Roof Top Tent

Just got a new roof top tent.

Mounted it on my Land Rover (uses generic Thule bars) and took it out for a weekend camping trip at the end of a 4x4 trail not too far from where I live. My 10 year old son and I had a great time. Used the car as our base camp, and went on hiking and fishing side trips.

I really like the tent it so far. Super easy to put up (takes less than 5 minutes.) Very comfortable, with a nice mattress.

I love the fact that it's on top of the vehicle. It's like having a portable tree house.

It weighs less than 90 pounds, and is reasonably aerodynamic when closed up. I didn't notice much of a detriment to either highway or off road driving.

Looking forward to using it more.

What is really the point of this type of tent though?

No animals get into your tent.

The point is that it's easier to set up than a regular tent, you don't have to worry whether the ground is muddy. You don't have to find a level spot to set up the tent with no rocks or sticks or other bumpy sharp things. It's fast and easy to take down. It's fun, and yes, it's true, no animals get into your tent. (These things were designed in Africa, where that's an issue. Here in North America, I suppose it's bears, rather than lions you worry about.)

Very weird. Very interesting. But mainly, nice to see you around, Kai. ~ H

Kinda cool. I assume it is somehow made comfortable on the floor via structured padding, given you don't have the ground as a foundation?

I'd either fall down that ladder or wake up thinking "did i put the emergency brake on?".

Interesting. Looks kinda gimmicky though. Bet it sucks to have to get up at night to take a piss. Walking down the ladder in the dark. Hell I'd just piss out the door. Black bears(the only kind I have experience w/) are only really a problem when people leave food, trash or anything that smells good where they can smell it. Such as in unsealed containers or bags. The only critter I've had problems with is mice at certain lean-to shelters on the at. Even if you hang your stuff up by para cord they still climb that shit and chew a hole into your pack to get at your food.

That things is really neat! I honestly want to go out and buy an off-road vehicle so I can buy a rooftop tent now

Cool, Kai. Foam mattress? Or inflatable?

That's kinda cool...pretty interesting. Who makes it? How long is it?

Nice set up! Info?

I've been thinking about one of these for my Range Rover Classic, but the options I've seen are around $1300.
