Best action movies - Page 4

spammers necro'ing threads these days? Hard Boiled - better than everything mentioned in this thread for numerous reasons not worth getting into for the uninitiated (looks like one or two other other people actually know their stuff). The Killer also deserves an honorable mention.

Police Story. No greater action scenes have been filmed.

[quote=Gradstudent78;264281] My all time favorite movie for it's sword work is the japanese film "Sword of Doom". The guy in that is just bad a$$.

Sword of Doom is great. If I remember correctly, he kills a guy in a fencing tournament and then shacks up with the guy's wife, and then slashes through a few dozen samurai in the finale. That's alpha as fuck.

Most of the biggies have been named, but I'll add "Fist of Legend" with Jet Li, and for a twist I'll throw some little-known faves. "Hard Rain" with Christian Slater, for its strong cast and entertaining script, and "Deep Rising" with Treat Williams, a fun action/horror flick similar in feel to "Tremors."

I don't think any other movie's greatness has ever been so dependent on supporting characters. Tom Arnold and Bill Paxton own the entire movie.

Makes me think of great action movie scenes (like when the bridge blew up with Jamie Lee dangling out of the helicopter in True Lies), and one that comes back is the above-shot of Bruce Willis in the ejector seat in Die Hard 2. Very cool.

+1 on True Lies. Such an amazing movie. Arnold and Paxton were great.

Some of my top action movies, although some might not be categorized as action

  • Black Hawk Down
  • The Rock
  • Terminator 2
  • Aliens (sci fi)
  • Top Gun
  • Navy SEALS -- maybe not *great*, but its one of those cheesy 80's flicks I like to watch when drinking with buddies)
  • Predator

Has anyone mentioned The Matrix? It's probably the most brilliant hijacking of John Woo's technique ever. That scene where there is the shoot out at the bottom of that building with the marble floors and walls must of had Woo sweating. Also, the last 2 Bourne movies. The first one, other than the great hook of the narrative, is pretty meh.

At the risk of getting railed on, I'm not a huge Bourne fan. I just don't like the fight scenes that are really up close and have hundreds of small cuts. I think it's cheating and using the the editing to cover up for the fact that Matt Damon isn't a martial arts expert (nothing against Matt Damon).

I'm glad to see somebody put in Desperardo and From Dusk til Dawn. These movie are both super campy and over the top, but they have some great lines and excellent action scenes.

I would also throw in there:

Once Upon a Time in Mexico
The Long Kiss Goodnight
The Running Man (Here's Subzero, now playing zero!") - Does that even make any sense?
Total Recall ("See you at the party, Richter!")
Cliffhanger (Ain't gravity a bitch!)
First Blood

Don't know how I could have forgotten about Man on Fire (the Denzel version) or Taken. Both are excellent action films.
