Selling a painting etiquette??

I'm in my last year of school and a teacher at my school asked one of my art teachers who had done one of my paintings, because they were interested in buying it - I assume they intend to approach me about it at some point.

I'm quite nervous about it because this would be my first painting sale and I have no idea how much is a fair amount to charge, or how you go about negotiating a price. I'd have to do a reproduction so I still have a a painting like it for my portfolio for foundation entry, and my time really isn't worth an less than about £200 - £300 at the minimum, however I'd feel pompous actually stating that to them, and I have no idea how much they expect to pay.

How would you deal with a situation like this?

I'd post a picture of the painting, but I think it really depends on how much the individual is willing to pay and not how much others evaluate its worth to be (though if you're curious to see it I'd be happy to PM you)

Thanks guys

when I am trying to sell a work I aggressively pursue the potential buyer through as many forms of communication as possible. Also I make threads on forums that are really just thinly-veiled self promotion.

That's great man - good for you! Ignore the comment from that butthead above.

I'd charge as much as I could get for it. The last thing you'd want to do as an artist would be to undersell yourself - you don't want to set a precedent of low prices if you expect to quickly raise the price of your future pieces. I'd search around other art forums for better advice cause I'm not sure how much help you're going to get here. I'm sure there's tons of documentation online about the first sale made by other artists.

"How much are you willing to pay?" Frankly, a hundred quid would be plenty.

I like it, Neil Dawson meets Monet. I would suggest that if the buyer is not a friend, then £300 asking price, with a negotiation to £225-£250 would be reasonable. You're un-published so you don't have the weight of fame behind you, but a published artists would look at £2,995 to £4,995 as an Original price. I'd say 10% of that is a fair price for a young artist.
