The amnesty period is over, so they can't amnesty Walton or World Peace this year. But that makes sense. This may seem far fetched right now, but Walton will be an asset next year. Or at least his $7M expiring contract will. Makes a lot more sense to both trade Walton next year and amnesty World Peace at the same time.

Who would want Walton?
MWP at least has some value, I'm sure Miami could use him. lol8[1].gif

basically some team that's looking to cut costs by dumping a player with a longer contract. MWP has 2 years and $15M left on his deal after this year. i think the market for him is smaller than for walton.

if there is a buyer for kwame, there is probably a buyer for walton.

edit: not to mention, after next year, the luxury tax gets a whole lot harsher. that last year on artest's contract will cost the laker's at least $17.5M. ($7M for his contract + 1.5 x 7 (at least 1.5. can be 1.75, 2.5, 3.25, depending how far over the tax they are) )

The Lakers were crap last night. However, I hope Mitch doesn't do a stupid trade. Vegas and most pundits still give them the best odds of taking the West.
If they don't pick up Howard or another All Star this year, they will pick one up next year.

Also, they are an overall younger team than last year and still have some great trade assets.

Eh, MWP has one more year than Walton. Who would I rather keep with the Lakers? MWP. I still think they should have amnestied Walton this year. Walton is a useless piece of bench warmer, MWP actually plays. I don't know why people are hating on him all of a sudden, didn't hear much of these when he helped them repeat but now that they lost last year, which isn't even entirely his fault (even one of the bright spots in the playoffs iirc), everyone wants him out. Dude is still defending like a champ. What the hell has Walton done int he past 5 years? He go two rings by wearing a damn suit on the sidelines.

it's way too early to push the panic button. new coach, new lineup, new offensive and defensive schemes and they've only been practicing for less than a week. Same is true for the Clips, of course, but they played a much more generic and much less regimented system to start with. i noticed lots of times players just seemed to be wandering around the court. or that things were obviously wrong ... a player would take the ball in the post, turn ... and there would be a teammate right beside him. they've got some serious kink-working to do, to be sure. and with bynum out for the first 5 games (almost 10% of the season!), it's going to get sticky.

Seriously, it's one game.

I'm not worried about 1 pre-season game but you guys know I've lobbying to get Walton out for maybe 3-4 years now. How much more does the Lakers have to pay this bum to sit on the bench or brick an open 3 or post up worse than Lebron?

i'm not clamoring for MWP to be amnestied, but i just think it is the smarter busines decision. if you amnesty walton, you're still going to pay him his $6M per year for two years and you're not going to go under the luxury tax or create any cap space to sign someone. you're just going to be paying him to sit at home instead of on your bench.

so why not keep him for at least a year? if you can't get anything for his expiring contract in the offseason next year, then you can still amnesty him then. though i still think they're going to hold onto it until the first year of the harsher luxury tax kicks in. or when they make a huge trade and need some tax relief...

Because he sucks. He might as well get paid sitting at home, he practically was for the past couple of years, at least he doesn't have to suck on the court this year.

And I thought amnestying someone does clear off from the salary cap? That is why Billups was amnestied before Chandler could sign.

Amnestying does clear off from the salary cap.

There is zero chance the Lakers will amnesty Walton. He is a fan favorite. He sells more jerseys than everyone besides Kobe and Pau.
The Lakers always keep at least one useless white guy around. Travis Knight, Slava, Mark Madsen,...

I am going to need proof of that. I don't think I've seen any Walton jerseys in the past 3 years and I've been to plenty of Lakers games.

Amnestying clears him from the salary cap, but the team still has to pay him. So the Knicks still pay Chauncey $12.5M to not play for them, while the Clips pay $2M for his services.

And amnestying him won't get the Lakers under the cap, so they're still a tax paying team, though they would be paying less tax.

I know that they will still have to pay him, that is why I said they should "pay him to sit at home because it's practically been what they've been doing the past few years." In the end, Walton sucks and at this point he is taking valuable spot from someone that could help. Just amnesty him and get someone that could help the team, period. There is no point in thinking long term now that the Howard and CP3 fell, they have to try and win now while Kobe can still go at it and Pau is still doing well.

Fuck the tax, the Lakers will always be over the cap, that's how they roll.
