I also have Lakers - Heat. Wouldn't be surprised if it was Bulls - Lakers though, so there's some homerism in that pick. The Bulls are just a deeper, more complete team right now than Miami. but I will be disappointed if Miami doesn't make the ECF, and you never know if Wade and Lebron's supporting cast get hot - Miami is the only team with two guys who are unguardable straight up, so they just need their teammates to defend well and knock down open shots

lol @ tony allen crying about not winning defensive player of the year "who does he check every night, at the center position?" tony allen is a great defender, a steals machine and he could definitely shut down the best swing players in the league. but c'mon dude...dwight howard can control the entire game just with his presence. locks down the paint, gets the other team into foul trouble, his team into the bonus, extra possessions from defensive rebounds, etc. lots of ppl probably don't even know who tony allen is

Containing him? He pretty much guarded him the whole first half but throughout the game, he just wasn't getting any calls. He drove a lot and got a lot of contact but more than half of them aren't called. The overall game was horrible, lots of turnovers and it wasn't even due to good defense, both teams were just sloppy. The Lakers were just less horrible last night if that makes sense.

nah i meant c paul was contained he didn't blow up for 30+ or get a double double or anything just not sure what kobe was up to...yeah less horrible makes sense. they won't turn it on till later in the playoffs that's my guess

i'm not sure i agree. i thought after that first 8 minutes, the lakes played pretty good defense, and a lot of it was due to kobe. their coordination on pick-and-roll was MUCH better. there were only a couple times they got burned with paul going into the key. those 2 threes at teh end of quarters, and the two kobe fouls on threes, though
i think i pointed out earlier this season that i think kobe is getting a little old and his legs are showing. two years ago, he could have wrestled paul and still had some offense. this year i think he has to pick his spots.
and, yes, the game was called REALLY loose, but pretty much both ways. i don't think anyone got screwed, but it did make for really sloppy, hammerhead basketball.
who could have predicted that Ron-Ron would be the lakers most consistent player in the playoffs?

Looked like Kobe was just focusing on defense the entire time. A la Olympic games. What's concerning is Gasol game... back-to-back eggs laid. Yeesh. No wonder Kobe says the guy isn't "mean" or have that killer instinct and drive. If Gasol wants to shake his title as soft, he needs to get mad and just rip them apart in NO.

foodguy: how many years do you think kobe has left?

do you mean how much longer does have left to play? or how much longer will he be kobe? arguably, he's not kobe even now ... somewhere on youtube there are greatest hits clips from his early years ... all hops and athleticism. he's in his maturity now ... still makes amazing shots, but mostly because of really impeccable footwork (and supernatural competitiveness). i think he's got another year or two of slow decline at this level and then he'll have to find another role if he's going to keep contributing. which, i'm hopeful and confident, he will.

here's another question for you: do you think the fact that he's only won one MVP is gonna hurt him in the 'greatest ever' talk?

nope. i think the rings will speak louder than mvps. but i don't think there will ever be an end to that argument. and in 10 years, there will be another promised child who will deserve to be compared to kobe and mj. to me it's fun, but silly. it's like arguing who was a better blues guitarist, muddy waters, or stevie ray vaughn (well, actually, i know the answer to that one -- jimmy rogers--particularly in the Wolf recordings).

well yesterday showed how stacked lakers are, kobe and gasol underperformed by their standards and the lakeshow continues to roll on. that's all that mattered in the end. the spectacular will come in later rounds
