NBA 2016-2017 Season Thread - Page 1384

I think everyone's body reacts differently to stuff like this.  Removing his meniscus might work out for D-Rose, but it might not.  Remember DeJuan Blair had both of his ACL's removed and he's been able to stay on the court just fine.  That shit honestly sounds terrifying.  The knee is such a vital joint for basketball that it's best if D-Rose consults like 10 different doctors on this before he decides what to do.

the thing with removing the meniscus wether complete or partial is that there's going to be dehabilitating arthritis down the road. normally down the road means when you're in your 50's or 60's but in the case of basketball players they process is sped along. the ACL repair type he opted to use was the hamstrings tendon iso-graft which requires a longer rehab but has prolonged/less arthritis outcomes - so you can only assume his mindset (along with recent interviews) is that he wants to avoid it [arthritis] later as well (as he should have the right to chose).

some players can actually deal with pain and perform, for example guys like Michael Jordan and Larry Bird, or in very extreme examples Andre Dawson (former MLB player who actually mentioned his doctors/physical therapists/team trainers by name in his Hall of Fame speech) - he injured his knee in high school and then played on astro turf (which was just a layer of felt on top of concrete not the cushy grass like artficial turfs they have now) for a decade.

so guys like Dwayne Wade who take that amount of time off are proactively trying to extend their career by borrowing time from practice and regular season games. other's like brandon roy who may have not had to deal with this kind of pain earlier in his playing career might not have been equipped to deal with it full time and decided to quit while ahead.

once those injuries start up you'll start to need more and more treatments. its a vicious cycle. Jerome Bettis was candid about it. - it took him almost an hour just to get out of bed Monday mornings. - during his prime.

I wouldn't be surprised if Rose collects on the remainder of his deal and retires.

Did you guys see the story about a former NBA player getting cut by a Philippine pro team because he said that it was a joke that Manny Pacquiao was a player/coach in the league?

I don't know what part of the story was crazier - that he got fired for saying that, or that Manny actually is a pro basketball player/coach

"[Pacquiao playing] is a joke," said Orton, who was the Hotshots' designated foreign player. "... Professional boxer? Yeah. Congressman? All right. But professional basketball player? Seriously? It's a joke."

And yes it is a shame that Pac being an owner gets to play for his team. Stick to the boxing ring or playing pick-up games where no one wants to guard you.

I thought Roy had degenerative knee issues before that? Or was that from lack of meniscus? I mean, Bledsoe last year removed part of his meniscus and the short term results have been good.

Arthritis is long term but joint swelling and pain is common and short term. It's why wade sits so often

Oh wow the doctor chimed in. That morning routine was crazy. My knees hurt just reading it. I can't imagine living the rest of my life like that no matter what the fuck idfnl says I have to give up for a chance at a championship. Sweat in my eyes when I read about the groin injury accident

I'm pretty sure if rose retires he doesn't get to collect

He will be made whole by insurance if his contract is insured, however

Not to drag this out any longer than it has to, but I'm just gonna leave this here...

From part 2 of Bill Simmons' trade value article:
Quote:
Six sarcastic retorts if/when a buddy says to you, “I just don’t know if Kawhi is a max guy. He’s putting up only 15 and 7 every night and he hasn’t been healthy all season … I think he might take a discount to stay.”

1. “Yeah, it’s not like the league is drifting toward über-athletic forwards who can make 3s, defend both forward spots and thrive in small ball AND big ball.”

2. “Great point, David Kahn.”

3. “You’re right, half the league’s teams have enough cap space to offer him a max contract this summer — there’s no way someone will bite.”

4. “No way he can put up better stats — NBA players always peak statistically at 23 when they’re the fourth option on a contender.”

5. “Yeah, he’ll take a discount to stay — he’s made less than $8 million playing basketball these last four years. He’s definitely ready to leave gobs of money on the table.”

6. “Hold on, I’m gonna make a list of everyone who can successfully defend LeBron or Durant in a seven-game series. Kawhi Leonard, and … oh, wait, we’re done.”

If you did, then nothing you say has meaning because most of what you post is the internet equivalent of pop music.
