The wife of a former colleague taught the Collins twins in high school. I recall at the time my colleague saying that they were good kids with supportive, sane family. Despite the fact that they were highly recruited, etc., they were solid students who, while maybe not academic superstars, did the work and did not act like they expected special treatment.

According to YCP on twitter (You Can Play, a GSM-athlete support group, mainly affiliated with hockey), he's the first (quasi) active openly gay male athlete in a NA professional team sport.

Supposedly, he twin brother had no idea he was gay until Jason told him like a year ago. That's some secret he lived for awhile.

Mark Cuban has said he'd want the first openly gay player to play for the Mavericks. I guess he can put his money up and prove it if Jason doesn't get signed to a better offer anywhere else.

I don't get it... what's the big deal with the photos? what's the big deal with any of it? he's gay... so what. nobody even knew who this guy was 5 minutes ago and now he's the 1st openly gay athlete... this is not a story.

IIRC John Amaechi came out a few years ago, but only after he had retired.

How is this not a story? You just said it, he's the first openly gay, active athlete in the US. It's a huge step towards accepting homosexuality when someone finally has the courage to come out in a homophobic, testosterone filled environment. Glad to see all the support from other athletes and sad, but not surprised, to see a few athletes (and Chris Broussard) saying idiotic things in response.

Always thought Chris Bosh would be the first

this instant replay on every out-of-bounds play rule in the last 2 minutes is really annoying

I mean yeah.. I know it's a "story" and the 1st pro athlete and all.... this article seems to sum it up for me.... that's all.

btw... didn't see/hear what Broussard said but that fact that it was idiotic is completely unsurprising!

Bkn v chi tonight was some high quality ball. The series has been ugly but tonight was a great throwback to the best of the 90s.

I dunno man, when gay people still can't get married in the US, it's pretty big news for somebody to come out. I get the sentiment that it should be normal, but for many parts of the country, it just isn't. And I think we should celebrate Collins coming out, because otherwise people might just forget that these inequalities continue to exist.

Holy shit, that's incredible...

I had no idea Jason Collins was still in the league.

real question is how many times are we going to hear his name and 'backdoor pass' in the same sentence.
