but it was also typical Pop. He could easily have managed that situation in a nonconfrontational way -- started those guys and just managed their minutes ... they play only 10 or 15 or even less. but he wanted to make a point. and he did. and so did stern.

Sure, I'd be upset if I traveled from SA to MIA to see the Spurs (I wonder how many people that was) but I'd also realize, if I knew anything about basketball, that the Spurs have a great bench and Popovich could coach them to a win. I'd then also realize that I'm in fucking Miami...who cares who they play?

Except not everyone who goes to the games are NBA fans that analyze and criticize the game like most of use do here, they do not see what NBA enthusiasts see. Point is simple, people paid to see the Spurs and their stars, whether that is to be beaten by Miami or not, they still paid.

If you're a Lakers fan that lived in Miami and they go to Miami and you go to the game and the Lakers sit Pau, Dwight and Kobe and they lose by 50 points, you wouldn't be pissed? The average guy who spent their $$$ to see those stars play that can only see them play once a year shouldn't be mad? Again if it were an injury, fine. If he sat Duncan and played the others, then good. But to sit the core of the team, the most known players by the average fans can be very disappointing, NBA enthusiast or not.

Again, keep in mind these guys plays each other once in their respective arenas so if you're a fan of a players, that is your only chance to see them play. And who knows, this might be Duncans last season? Hell Ginobili can be one injury away from retirement too.

But dude... they didn't lose by 50 points. They lost on that Ray Allen 3, a costly turnover, and the subsequent foul party that followed.
You have a valid point about this possibly being Duncan and Manu's last year but, in my mind, they saw a great basketball game and that's the best they could've hoped for, regardless of who's on the court.

Yah but the sanction wasn't announced after the game, it was before. They lost a lot of viewers for sure because people would think it's a blowout, if you advertise the Spurs vs. Miami game that it would be w/o Duncan, Parker, Manu and Green, then I would guarantee they wouldn't have sold as much tickets because most (if not all) would assume it would be a blow out.

So your saying that if they did lose by 50 and half the arena fans has emptied by 4th quarter and millions of people tuned out of their television that the sanction would be ok?


People who schedule these games are featured nationally televised games that a lot of advertisers determine to spend their money and yes they would know that Spurs, one of the best teams and their stars, would be a draw against the Heat. This is the main reason we do not see a Kings vs. Wizards game nationally televised on Christmas.

bottom line, it's about entertainment, not about competition. people pay to see a play with meryl streep and robert deniro, they want to be able to tell their friends they saw them. and even if the understudies were perfect, they would feel cheated.

actually i do, though i think that phrasing is a bit extreme. the coach's obligation is to look after the health of his players; the league's obligation is to look after the health of the game as a whole. when the two collide, the greater good should be served. granted, this is an extreme case, but as i posted earlier, it would be very hard not to read the benchings as a big FU from pop to stern.
of course, this wasn't about dictating the lineup, it was about dictating that you can't rip off the paying customers. or at least that there's a limit to how far you can go doing that.

no way can you set a precedent such as that... it's absurd. and Stern is just pissed that Pop does what he feels is best for the team in his professional opinion (with an I'm sure not unintentionally subtle, or not so subtle, FU to Stern) and does not unquestionably kowtow to Darth Stern overlord of the universe. We all know what's going on here and in short it's pretty simple... SA was on the tail end of a tough road trip, Pop legitimately felt they needed the day off so they got it. That Stern has other priorities ($MONEY$) is irrelevant... eff him.

@idfnl... from what I've gathered (news, interviews, etc) Pop has a kinda grumpy old man sense of humor and personally enjoys jerking people's chains a bit... more so with inane on court reporters who ask asinine questions or overly sensitive power mongers like Stern whom he can get all riled up so easily just for the hell of it.... just a possibility

that is f'g ridiculous!! NE was fined $250K by NFL for actively CHEATING!! SA gets same fine for resting their most important stars who actually needed (in coaches opinion) the day off?? wtf is that? Only sanction that was really even possible was economic (like what's Stern going to do, bench Pop?? LOL!) and Stern is lamely attempting to send a message. wtf does SA even care to pay the fine (substantial as it was) if Duncan, Manu and Tony are in better health and making a push in late May and June?

EDIT: on NPR Talk of the Nation right now they are talking about Stern's megalomania! LOL

this ... as i said before: if it was simply a matter of pop being worried about his players, he could have done this very quietly. but he chose to make an issue of it. and i'm no fan of stern (i'm a laker fan after all), but when pop chose to make an issue of it, stern probably had to respond.
