Not that I don't agree, but I wonder how much help many of these have in terms of getting good advice to make good decisions. Here's a guy who is very good, but not great. In some ways he's never lived up the expectations that were put upon him when he was drafted #1 overall. The guy gets brainwashed over the course of several years into believing that he needs to prioritize "managing his brand" over winning.
Has anybody read that 10-year old piece in the Washington Post about
Kwame Brown? It's pretty long, but it paints a very good picture of just how unprepared many of these guys are for real life, let alone life as a celebrity with huge career expectations.
At this point, what the hell are the Magic supposed to do? If you can only trade him to one team (NJN) and that team has limited assets to begin with why even bother working out a trade. NJN has no incentive to send you anybody that is halfway decent. From a salary cap perspective, they would probably be better off just benching Howard for the year and sell off as many other assets as possible for future draft picks. Then next year Howard comes off of the books and start over through the draft. In the meantime, Howard is forced to waste one of his prime years and it diminishes his value in the free-agent market the following year.
