Is it possible...and I know this is crazy talk, but just consider it for a second...is it possible that the Mavs are...it's so ridiculous I almost can't let myself think it. OK, here goes...Could the Mavs just be a better team than the Lakers? Is it possible that people have underestimated Dirk? Is it possible that with the addition of Tyson Chandler and the amping up of the defense under Rick Carlile that the Mavs have actually elevated their game to a championship level?

It's crazy talk I know. Just wanted to throw it out there. Lot's of talk about in here about how this all about the Lakers not living up to their potential. What if it's about the Mavs just being better?

The Mavericks have won five straight playoff games since suffering a mini-meltdown of their own, when they squandered a 23-point lead on the road in Game 4 of their first-round series against Portland. The bounced back, finishing off the Trail Blazers in six and haven't slowed down since. They've been here twice before in franchise history, completing the sweep of Memphis in the first round in 2006, but needed seven games to eliminate the Trail Blazers in the first round in 2003.

This time, however, it's different. Dirk Nowitzki and his crew are doing this against the most dominant team in the league, a Lakers' team that has been virtually untouchable the past two seasons.

"It was a slugfest of a game," Carlisle said. "We were down eight with six minutes left, but we hung in there and kept battling. Dirk Nowitzki made it happen. Just about everything that happened down the stretch was a direct result of him either scoring the ball or making a play to get somebody a shot or make a pass for an assist or a three or two, or whatever it was."

The Lakers will swear it was them. They gave this one away, same way they did Game 1. But that's not the case.

The Mavericks' 42-15 scoring edge from the bench in Game 3 is what did it. That combined 60-20 scoring edge from the 3-point line and the free throw line is the difference.

This is no longer about the Lakers and their issues, fatigue, drama and intrigue.

It's all about the Mavericks.

I'm not a Mavs fan by any means, but I've always felt the Mavs havent done enough to get Dirk a ring. perhaps this could change.

As long as the Heat dont go anywhere, I'm happy.

the game was close the whole game through with lakers leading before i left at 4 min +/-. friend texted me saying they lost a 7 point lead or something at the end. i still got lakers in game 7! (Not a Laker fan fyi) Go Lebron!

what's "better team" mean? the mavs are definitely the team that is playing better right now. 16 of the last 18 games, they weren't.
why didn't they get the ball inside? did you watch? the mavs were totally packing the paint. and because the lakers couldn't hit jumpshots, they got away with it (compare to the lakers doing a drive-by doubleteam on nowitzki, snap pass to kidd, snap pass to terry or stojakovich ... 3!).

What does the last 18 games have to do with anything? Last year they weren't better. LA was a better team. Even earlier this year, Dallas hadn't fully developed their defensive game.

I did watch. What I saw was a Mavs team that presented significant mismatch problems for the Lakers. The Lakers bigs are effective at hammering people inside. But when you've got a 7 footer who is a threat to either pound the ball inside or step out and shoot 40+% from the arc, the Lakers are (or anyone is) simply defenseless. When that player is also effective at exploiting double teams AND has great scoring options to dish off to, it makes for a pretty damned good team.

As for the Mavs packing the paint, I think you have things reversed. Once it became clear that LA couldn't shoot, Carlile decided to take away the interior until they LA proved they needed to guard the perimeter. Until LA proved they could hit the shot doing anything else would have been incompetent coaching. Dallas has significantly improved its perimeter defense this year. That they didn't need it in this series doesn't mean they were bad at it, just that LA didn't make them use it.

Face it. LA isn't losing. Dallas is winning.

BTW. I'm not sure that you and I are saying much different. I was objecting more to some of the other comments here that seemed to neglected to notice that there was even another team on the floor the last 3 games.

And that has NOTHING to do with the Mavs? Kobe's playing pretty well. Bynum had his best game of the series in Game 3. Shannon Brown had a great game. Pau made some mistakes, but he also had a better game than he's had in the series. Dallas was just better.

you don't get credit when you've choked in the playoffs for the past decade. they'll get credit if they win the championship (which they won't)

Sorry guys. Lakers are done. I'm very surprised that Dallas has swept them so far. The games have been close and Dallas hasn't folded But don't fear, there's plenty of room on the Heat hate bandwagon but can you stand rooting for the Celtics?!

If the Lakers are out I'm rooting for the Grizz! But as much as I wanted the Heat to lose in the reg season I wouldn't mind seeing them come out of the east or maybe win it all. None of these other teams left deserve it and the ones that do (okc, bulls) I don't really like.
