was a smart play, Haslem got a clean look from a spot where's he's automatic

the way the game was being called, he would have probably been called for an offensive foul if he tried to barrel his way to the rim...

also, you don't see too many refs call that foul in a late game situation, but I guess Wade was a bit careless, it was a back to back, so maybe there was some mental fatigue, it took something special for them to claw back from such a big deficit against such a scrappy team

late game execution will still haunt the team but it is what it is... clutch genes/luck whatever

Lakers might pick up Michael Beasley for a draft pick. Is he any good?
He was good at Kansas State with Bill Walker, and he had a decent game off the bench the other night. I think that's about it. Lakers don't need him and his stash.
yeah, if stephen a. smith said it it is just about a lock that it is not even remotely factual
What??? Stephen knows his ****. "All you HATERS be disrespecting me when I TELL you about a trade MONTHS before it happens and then it happens and y'all act like you KNOW what you're talking about you don't know DON'T call me with that junk I'M here to educate y'all cause I'M from Brooklyn and then y'all don't even APPRECIATE it I know EVERY player in the NBA personally man I know what they're thinking before they do and Skip Bayless whatever that dude people NEED to respect me man oh here's Shawna on the 101 hi sweetie how ya doin' on the Stephen A. Smith Show tonight baby?"
Cannot. Stand. His. Schtick.

thats the weird part... I was listening to espnNY radio and then heard him and totally dismissed what he was squawking about... then googled about the Steinbrenner kids dodging a huge potentially 500million dollar inheritance tax bullet last year...

the buss children look to be in a very similar situation if the patriarch dies -only there's no more loopholes to avoid the almost 50% inheritance tax.

How would dumping a few salaries really impact the estate that much though? Isn't Buss' net worth something like $350M? I don't get the theory, and I doubt Smith knows how the Buss estate is actually structured anyway.

I did some reading into this... after reading about the seinbrenner kids it got me really interested in the whole estate/inheritance tax thing.

http://www.clublakers.com/lakers-discussion/lakers-financial-moves-due-estate-tax-t133364.html

lots of interesting points brought about in that forum.

there was this article from the LA times: http://www.latimesmagazine.com/2009/05/jerry-buss-family-lakers.html

and this part from that article:

Despite all of his preparation, there is one thing papa Buss admits could derail the ownership plan: the inheritance tax: "It's a severe economic issue for me. It's an ongoing one, and I'm addressing it as best I can. I'm prepaying the taxes, and I'm keeping my fingers crossed that I live long enough to accomplish the whole thing."

Could it force a sale? "It could," he says. "There are rules and regulations, but we're getting to a point where I'm pretty sure my family can hold on to the team." If that happens, the kids claim it will be a smooth transition. They insist the stories of family infighting that have brought down so many teams will never apply to the Lakers.

basically they are trying to get under the salary cap and unnecessary expenditures (even the firing of their scouting staff reeks of cost cutting). I can only assume its to keep their liquid finances for payroll (for players/staff/employees) going/secure. I remember reading about how sports franchises run under really thin cash flow margins. so the total worth of a franchise may be really high but they may be caught cash poor (kind of like the dodgers situation only instead of the divorce crippling the financial flexibility this time its the impending inheritance tax burden).

Very interesting, thanks much. The fellow who wrote the 2nd post in that forum has some good replies. Interesting that when the O'Malleys sold the Dodgers the estate tax was appparently an issue there as well. I remember when Jack Kent Cooke sold the Lakers, etc. to Buss it was because JKC was going through a nasty divorce, similar to the McCourt/Dodger situation now.
Now it makes sense that every dollar counts, in terms of having enough liquid assets to pay the tax off, especially as the value of the team goes up. I suppose Buss could sell another portion of the team to Anschutz or someone if things get desperate, but I hope he doesn't have to sell it all. While I'm not a fan of Jim, I think Jerry Buss is one of the greatest owners in sports, and I hope he's able to take care of these issues before his time comes.
I had to administer my family's estate tax (at a MUCH lower level, of course) when my parents passed. Even with few assets, etc. it was a complete nightmare. the worst experience I've ever been through after their deaths. It really is an exhausting thing to go through.

Personally I think firing the scout staff reeks of an insecure power play, as does pushing out Phil and anyone associated with him.

How an org. is run is so important and right now it looks like a loser is at the helm.

The Lakers should also be lousy with cash as they just signed a huge TV deal.

yeah its these kind of things that really give you perspective on government and birthrights and what being wealthy really actually means

^it was through listening to stephen smith and his crap that peaked my curiosity into reading further into the subject. He's loud and annoying, but damn that death/estate/inheritance tax angle was a juicy tidbit that I had to understand further. the gossip part was interesting, but even more enlightening were the facts about estate tax and the greater ramifications of how the US government has so much control over assets that would seem to be your birth right - your dad dies and leaves his business to you? great - but 55% is actually owed to the Federal Government... Can't pay? too bad, sell off part (or the whole business) or else file for bankruptcy. its the ultimate shake down...and was implemented/supported by both Dem and Rep since the 1800s.

Rondo putting on a show so far. I still don't understand why the Celtics want to trade him.

Kobe with 18 points already, with 9 minutes left in the second quarter. Guess he was fired up after all.

Also, :worship:@ Rondo. 17 rebounds and 20 assists?
