In addition to doing my regular condition/polish regimen, should I periodically (say, every 3, 6, or 12 months) do a more thorough cleaning and conditioning? Or is weekly/monthly enough?

Probably not necessary, but depends on how much wear your shoes endure and under what kind of conditions.

Shoes are not apartments. If you care for them properly & regularly [polishing & brushing] there's no need for spring cleaning.

With welted shoes, a friend of mine takes a hard bristle brush, and scrubs at the welt a few times a year to get grime out. I think this helps

I normally do a full clean after every wear. It is a nice way to wind down before bed. Also, if you do not let your shoes get too dirty, then you never need to spend too much time taking care of them.

I had a friend in middle school who told me he would regularly take the wheel off of his bike, stand it up straight and hold his shoe on the tire. He would then insert ********* into the shoe and supporting himself by his arms on the grouund roll back and forth.

You can try this. He is doing ok today as an equities analyst.

I find shoe care beyond regular polishing (brushing, scrubbing, kneading...) very therapeutic just before I put on my pajamas and turn in

Are there any good resources online for a newbie to thoroughly learn all the different methods and things you can do to care of a quality pair of shoes?

I polish mine and apply sole/heel/edge dressing as necessary, and buff the shoes every time I wear them (I have an electric shoe buffer). Nothing else. Maybe if I got globs of mud on them I would do something about it, but I don't walk in mud, so that's never going to happen.

Which shoe buffer do you have? How does it work out for ya?

Do you clean the soles or just brush it down?

Does anyone know where I can get a hold of Saphir products in London?

It may be that the John Lobb (Paris) stuff they sell on Jermyn Street is indeed repackaged Saphir. I asked in store, but even they weren't that sure. Even if it is Saphir, it might be the cheaper line and not Medaille d'Or.

Failing that, you'll either have to buy online (postage is hefty) or jump on the Eurostar to Paris.

Don't waste your time, thinking you'll track it down at some out of the way cobbler in the UK. It ain't going to happen
