Have you pre treated with shaving cream? I find that shaving cream is a great. if you have a choice use barbasol and white foam (gel is fine too but the color makes me nervous sometimes)

White wine works well,

Any alcohol will pick up most of the residue that's not water soluble, but depending on the material, high %'s might damage the carpet.
