Cheaney shoe range

I've searched through SF on Cheaney and it seems that there is very limited information on them.

I've seen the Cheaney special offered at P Lal and am interested to get a pair. However I have a few burning questions regarding the Cheaneys offered at P Lal.

1) Is it true that they are from Cheaney Signature and Avant Garde range only?

2) How do I differentiate the Signature range from the Avant Garde range or the rest if 1) is not true? (Somebody actually commented that Signature range sometimes come with closed channel oak bark soles which is not available in the lower ranges. True?)

Thanks

I've heard the Church boys, a little upset and feeling righteous about how pap's name was drug through the mud vis a vis Prada, are having another crack at the game: they're owners now of old Joseph Cheaney & Sons and are going to see what's what about getting the Prada-wearing devil out of Church's.

You may wish to look at the Herring Shoes website for Cheaney. There are a number of ranges, including one specifically for Herring.

The Avantgarde range is described as having a "more contemporary twist, both in the design and last shape". Some of the Signature range do have closed channel oak bark soles - I've got some myself. Construction across the current range doesn't differ too much - they are all well made, however better leather is used the more expensive the shoe. Cheaney's new "Imperial" range have finer detailing and finish.

precisely because they all are constructed equally well that I find it hard to differentiate between the lines..

If I were to pay the same price off P Lal's cheaney special I would like to get the signature range for more value. However the problem remains that I am not familiar with cheaney's design and it seems the shoes offered in the Cheaney specials are discontinued models that I cant find on Herrings or Cheaney sites anymore.

Would it be a sound conclusion to make that if the shoes have closed channel and oak barked sole, it has to be from the signature range?

Thanks for all the replies!

It's possible, but not always the case. Cheaney will make shoes under special order - they will make up shoes to whatever specification is requested. If you find a pair with closed channel oak bark soles, and you like them, just buy them - you won't regret it!

The chukkas I had were from the premiere range and I don't think I will ever wear another chukka. Solid fit & finish.

You might get in touch with their customer support (email on their website), they respond quickly. I had a few email changes with Sheila from Cheaney asking about the new lines (City; Signature has been replaced by the Imperial Collection, a premium range of shoes with hand-painted oak bark soles and fiddle waists) , the new website to open soon and I had a question about I pair I was about to buy from a reputable ebay seller. The seller was claiming they were from the Signature collection (same last as my Burton Signature boots), but Sheila informed me they were from the Cheaney of England collection. The quality along these collections seems to be consistent.

Yah, I have gotten in touch with Sheila from Cheaney as clausc suggested. She confirmed that the shoes I am interested in are MTOs and hence it is non conclusive as to whether the close channel oak bark soles represent shoes from their top line.

Ok now for the noob question, I have just recently started becoming interested in a properly constructed shoe and have not handled many of such shoes in flesh as they are not readily available in Singapore. How do I differentiate oak bark soles from normal leather sole? Do the nail test and see if it leaves an indentation in the sole?

Ok, I've gone to PLAL to look for the shoes that is on their Cheaney Special website. Most of the shoes that I was looking for are no longer available except for 1:

Says "Joseph Cheaney" on the insole and "Bench Made In England" on the outsole

Apart from the Cheaney specials that I went looking for, I also found a Prada chukka lying with the Cheaney shoes. The sales rep told me these pair of chukkas were originally constructed by Church's?

Not to sure about the part where it was made by Church's, but it was really comfortable and so I grabbed it.
