Church's worth the $ ???? - Page 2

No wonder the look of leather on Church's for Jill Sander wingtips seemed odd to my eye. And check out these " gems "

Church's are overpriced for what you get. Church's are USD 980 or GBP 490 at one store here in Australia (Ref: Henry Bucks) which is ridiculous so it is not a surprise that people are reluctant to purchase.

Churchs arent bad value if you get them for around $50.00-$100.00 in non corrected leather.

I take a 7F and it is quite a challenge to find a shoe which I like at that price in my size (and I look for pre-Prada when I opt for second hand).

How have the Church's shoes gone down hill since the Prada take over? l've never heard that before.

for one, the post-Prada 'Masterclass's' are a shadow of the pre-Prada Masterclass's - leather wise and manufacture wise, and to my eye are Italian in shape, rather than English in shape, which I don't like.

They have gone downhill dramatically and IMHO are still relying on their old reputation. As many posters previously noted, there are a number of mid/upper mid British shoemakers who make higher quality shoes at the same or a lower price.

It seems like the problems that SF members have with post-Prada Church's are threefold:

(1) Introduction of sleeker, more Italian-style models that appear incongruous with Church's traditional English offerings.

(2) Increased use of corrected grain leather (under whatever terms they use).

(3) Big jump in price without a corresponding increase in quality. This occurred a half-dozen years ago when currency exchange rates were (relatively) stable.

Church's core offerings (like the Diplomat, my favorite) appear to be of the same quality as they were before the takeover. It's just that with the price hikes, the value proposition has diminished. That reduced value has manifested itself in complaints about lower quality. Such is the risk of raising prices without an improvement in quality or obvious external factor (like exchange rates currently).

Hey, RJman, quick question about plal.com. Did I see that correctly that all the prices are in Malaysian Dollars? I used a currency converter off the net and found that I could roughly divide all of the quoted prices by 3.25. Does that sound right?

While I won't disagree that Church's might not represent a good deal for $500, I think the OP needs to take a few things into consideration.

First, are THESE shoes corrected grain? Who cares if Church's has offered corrected grain leather on some models at various times, if these are "custom grade" with a high quality aniline leather, then QED.

Second, if these are at a bricks and mortar store near you and they fit you well, that's certainly an important factor. As is your opinion of the shoe's design.

^ This thread is two years old. I would hope the "OP" has moved on by now...

That's about correct, I believe. type "xxxx MYR in USD" into Google to get a conversion of a plal price, where xxxx is the price.

Perhaps, although I'd like to think that my advice is timeless.
