When I shower I end up not using shampoo and just running the bar through my hair, is this detrimental in any way, and if so, how serious?

Then I assume anyone using bar soap in the shower must have residue all over their body?

You have opt for a bad option. You know this that shampoo and soap have chemicals. The ingredients in bar soap kill hair growth in comparison to shampoo. You should use some herbal products for washing your hair. Washing your hair less will keep it from drying out but you should clean your scalp regularly because a dirty scalp can inhibit growth or cause more dandruff.

I did this for a while. My hair was a little drier than using shampoo, but otherwise no ill-effects. Not sure what you're worried about.

depends on hair length - when my hair is shaggy length it gets all gross. When its short I just use the bar soap or the body wash.

I did this for an entire summer while living at a lake house up in Canada back in my college days(baths/washing hair were all done in the lake, from late May to mid-August). We used Ivory soap because it would float -- it's pretty gentle stuff. No problem.

Depends on the quality of the bar soap of course.

The main issue is that bar soap doesn't have moisturizer, making your scalp dryer and leads to dandruff (which is just flaky skin from your head).

The effects of washing your hair with bar soap on a daily basis are not going to show up immediately, but should have an effect over time. As you age you may lose hair more quickly then necessary. My understanding is that it's best to rinse every day and use a conditioner and shampoo twice a week.
I have no credentials to support the above statement, but it's what I do.

There are all in one bars of soap which are fine with hair as well

If you are washing your hair w/ bar soap every day it's going to dry it out. Not a big deal I guess if you sport a buzz-cut, but otherwise, just use shampoo.

I used to do this when I had a bald fade that was shorter than a #2 on top, but whenever hair gets over 5/8"-3/4" inch, the residue looks really bad after a few days buildup. Maybe some soaps leave less residue than others.
