roughly following the Zone diet helps me (no it's not a high-protein diet like Atkins). The biggest benefit IME comes from focusing on "favorable" vs "unfavorable" carbs. In other words, eating massive amounts of fruits and vegetables every day and very little if any processed sugar or starches, and just enough protein mostly from non read meat sources. Also avoiding caffeine and alcohol.

I think there might be something to this.

That aside, I'm a big skeptic, and all the talk of meditation sounds like BS to me, but given how many people are suggesting it maybe there's somthing to it.
I think sleep might help, not just getting more of it, but making sure you follow you circadian rhythms of whatever.

Meditation (and hypnotism, they are related) works because it is sort of like exercising and increasing your ability to control your subconscious mind via your conscious mind. Or maybe it's the other way around. Doesn't matter.

The fact that you can do it (focus) when you have a deadline means you actually have complete control over the situation. You don't need medication. No bullshit "ADD" drugs, etc..

So you can focus when you "have" to. This means it's completely psychological, unless you think the deadline causes a chemical/physiological change.
