anybody been in one? not sparing, but a white collar (or otherwise) boxing match with referees and points and your name on the poster type of thing?

I had three amateur kickboxing fights to a very symmetrical record of 1-1-1

Haha, I too am 1-1-1.

ok, what might be a very stupid question - how did it compare to sparing in terms of punishment to your body?

here's the deal - I have been asked to participate in a fight. my wife is worried about it. and I really don't need to end up with some damaged teeth or anything else that will mark me for a few weeks. I'm not a kid anymore. sparing isn't a big deal, but when the stakes are higher for everyone, I am wondering about that. of course, we are talking headgear, I'm not insane.

Why risk it when you have a responsibility to your family? You're a former IDF guy, there's nothing else you need to prove.

A poaster must continually re-prove he is cool to SF.

I'll be having my first amateur boxing match Oct. 16.

Don't worry about your pretty face. Besides body shots... the worse you will probably face is getting knocked the fuck out in front of a large crowd. If your stomach isn't well conditioned, or you have no stamina you ain't lasting long. Honestly dude, maybe you shouldn't do it. I don't think you would get hurt seriously, but if you're asking about this maybe you ain't really confident in your skills as a boxer.

Women always get 'worried'.

Is your wife worried worried (like you irresponsible bum how could even entertain such an idea), or worried with a a kind of twinkle in her eye (like my husband the stud kind of way)?

I say do it.

You know, I don't remember being particularly hurt....while I was in the ring, I basically could not feel anything. The days following, I remember being pretty sore, but certainly no serious damage was sustained.

+1

Boxing is mostly just feeling "impact" without pain while the adrenaline is pumping through you. The worst damage ever done to me has been while sparring (have been cut a few times), but amateur boxing isn't too bad outside of soreness (feel like you and someone else were trying to beat the shit out of each other. Go figure ) and a couple of bruises for the most part.

ok, that's what I was looking for. I was sort of thinking that, when sparing, you're reallly not trying to hurt the other guy, when this is a "fight" with a crowd and so on, the stakes get higher and more damage is done. I think that the only thing that worries me is teeth - I'd hate to spend a month or so without a front tooth, wouldn't look good at work.

thanks all.

I am honestly not sure I'll do it or not, but I am leaning towards it. I get a huge kick out of sparing, and this has to be 10 times as much adrenaline. it also will give me a "target" for working on specific skills and building up my cardio capacity.

How old are you anyway, globetrotter? Since I believe you're well into the Masters division, any honorable matchmaker wouldn't put you up against someone much younger than you. I think they also cut the rounds down to 1:30 when you get a certain age also. Old dudes + short rounds = I wouldn't worry so much about the physical damage.

Do you know how long the match will be? My first amateur match went for 3 rounds, 1 minute apiece. That's a very different fight compared to 3 by 3 (which generally comes down to who has better conditioning in an amateur boxing match IME).

I say do it Zach. It's one of those things that you will look back on when you are 70 and smile about. You only get a certain number of chances to go childish stupid shit - especially when you reach an age where you are officially Too Old For It...but when you do, you very rarely look back on them with regret....
