Merino V Neck Sweaters... Suggestions?

I usually just go with the GAP variety. They are cheap, thin (which is great if you decide to wear them under a jacket) and typically last about 2 years at which point, they fall apart.

I'll be heading to the GAP soon. My 2 years are up.

For 60-70:
Polo Ralph Lauren (Higher end)
Jcrew (Medium)
Lands end canvas (Lower)

Lands end canvas might be a good bet, every color in a standard V neck and free returns.

Gap has horrible sweater, they stretch too much and quality isnt that great anyway.

I have bought merino v-necks at Gap, Banana Republic, and JCrew over the years. I like them in that same order, least to most. None of them are the greatest sweaters ever, but they work nicely for layering and fit me pretty well.

Neiman Marcus' house brand (made by Zegna Baruffa) merino sweaters are a much better buy at that price.

Damnit! If you'd asked a couple of days ago Uniqlo UK had their merino/cashmere v-necks for £9.99 each. Now they're back up to £24.99. They're a good jumper though, even at full price. It appears all you've got in the US is light mohair blend though. And in an uninspiring range of colours.

I'm in the same boat. I've been looking at John Smedley, which is sometimes able to be had at good prices on eBay. I have a cardigan made by JS and it's really great.

My old BR stuff is terrible; lost its shape within maybe a month. I definitely wouldn't recommend BR or any of its affiliated labels. I've been considering J Crew, but have been holding out for some recommendations on SF actually.

Uniqlo

I have the Brooks Bros. merino v-neck in like 10 colors, all purchased end-of-season for a good price. They're nice, but occasionally develop holes in the shoulder, which annoys the shit out of me, though I don't mind a bit of mending here and there, as it gives me a chance to bust out one of my free sewing kits that comes free in the bathrooms of rooms at the Ritz.

I would definitely say go with J. Crew and avoid BR. The quality of the wool J. Crew uses seems to me much better, and I prefer the cut as well. Another place to check is Club Monaco. You can get fairly decent merino v-necks there, and they almost always have some on sale (in fact, I would avoid paying full price for a sweater there since you're almost certain to find it on sale eventually). The Club Monaco sweaters tend to be lighter-weight than the J. Crew ones, which makes them a little dressier and great for layering (good sweater to wear under a blazer). I've got a couple of Club Monaco sweaters that I've been wearing for three or four years now and they've held up great.

Bloomingdale's just got in both cashmere and merino sweaters from their own private label. Tons of colors, they come in v-necks, crew necks, cable knits, half-zips, etc. The merinos are $78 and are currently buy one get one half off.

You can get some good Made in England sweaters from Barrington Ayre. Excellent customer service there.

JCrew are nice, but after 5-8 wears they start to pill, so dont get too attached. They are one-two season wears at best. But on sale you can dig them up for $20 or so, so the investment is rather low.

I have about 10 or so J. Crew sweaters and overall I'd say they are well worth $25-35 when they are on sale, but not the $60/70/90 they retail at. They also don't last very long. If you're even in Spain Massimo Dutti makes some nice ones for relatively good prices. But wait for the J. Crew sales and get a bunch when they are cheap. Never been a fan of polo either and it seems like polo quality is going down a bit.
