Is it appropriate to wear a tie that is darker than your suit?

I have a lavender shirt and navy blue tie with lavender dots. I don't want to wear a navy blue, charcoal, or black suit because then there would be no contrast between the tie and the suit. Is it acceptable to wear a navy blue tie and a medium or light grey suit? In other words, is it acceptable to wear a tie that is darker than the suit?

Depends on the suit and the tie and the shirt. Post some pics.

People always wear ties darker than their suit. Black ties look great with both navy and gray suits.

I agree. Ties don't need to have any contrast with the suit. Watch any James Bond movie witn Sean Connery and you can see some great examples. In his first 5 Bond movies all of his ties are black, midnight blue, navy blue or brown. Ties don't need to be lighter. I quite often wear a tie darker than my suit. What about a light grey or beige suit? A darker tie looks great with those.

+1 basic rule of aesthetics is you need a background neutral color from which the other colors can stand out... if your shirt, tie and jacket are all a substantial color, neither of the colors will stand out, (and you'll look like you're stuck in the 80's.)

Absolutely. If it weren't, then suits medium gray or lighter would be very difficult to wear. But suits medium gray or lighter are not difficult to wear. Ergo, QED.

Sorry, I'm a total neophyte here, but aren't you saying a person should always wear a white shirt?

Not necessarily always white shirts, but always light. Light blue and white are the staples; light yellow/ecru/pink/mauve as alternatives. Dark blue/purple/black are not proper unless you're clubbing.

Not always true. Would depend entirely on how your skin tone looks against the shirt color.

So, which dark shirts are OK for the office? And what skin tone do you have to be for them to look OK?

(expecting to hear crickets chirping...)

Yes it is ok to wear a tie that is darker than the suit.

And no, you do not need contrast between suit and tie (see below), however I would seek some contrast between the shirt and suit.
