The key is more the leather used, and this is sometimes not as great in certain shades, more than certain styles. The main worry was the volume going up all round, which means you either take on more staff etc. or you cut a few corners.
I think you will find personal gripes, but not comment about a whole run of shoes.

I think the available production space would be the main problem - can't put staff in a factory that's working to absolute capacity with all machinery in use.

Another quick question if anyone could advise - how would a 4444 last 5-fitting compare with a 4497 last 6-fitting in terms of width?

I've managed to try a few pairs, and found the 4444 to be too big all over, whilst the 4497 was a great fit round the heel but a touch long and narrow on my bigger foot. Unfortunately my local shop only carries a small selection, so I wasn't able to try a 4497 in a wider fitting.

I am actually surprised that no one has spotted these before.  They appear on the Selfridges web site and appear to be a special collaboration with Trickers to inaugurate the new Selfridges shoe department - which bills itself as the largest shoe department in the world!  Kurt Geiger seems to be responsible for these as they run some of the Selfridges department.  I telephoned and had a pair sent over to the States and they arrived yesterday.  Let me just say that sizing is not easy with Trickers!  I am a 91/2 US/42.5 European (Italian).  Trickers recommendation is to size down 1/2 size for US however many here do not subscribe to that theory.  My first pair of Trickers, Stow boots, were purchased in at the Jermyn St. shop two years ago and I ended up with a Trickers size 81/2 ie a full size down from my US size.  The 4497 last seems to fit me well (I do not have a full foot).  Last year I purchased a pair of the Kurt Geiger special Trickers motorcycle patch boots (calf/grain combination) and since they were only done in whole sizes I went for an 8 which seems to fit ok - perhaps a bit snug in the toe area however definitely wearable.  Further conversation with Richard at Shoehealer seems to indicate that although these look like Stow's they actually are made on a different last - perhaps custom for the Italian market.

Now to the point at hand - the fit of the 4444 last.  Based on forum postings most people recommend sizing down 1/2 when going from a 4497 to 4444 last.  As such I ordered the above shoe in a size 8 - 1/2 size down.  Wow - is this a FULL fitting last - it is actually huge.  I am now having a size 71/2 sent over to try.  I hope that it will not be too small as it is quite a ways down from my US size 91/2 - and a full size down from the 4497 Stow's.  I seem to recall reading that there is a 4mm difference in length from one size to another so I hope not to encounter a problem with the length - and I hope that the transition to a 71/2 will tighten the width and fullness up.  We shall see as I keep my fingers crossed and hope for the best - they ARE a gorgeous pair of shoes!

I currently own a pair of Stow 4497 boots in size 81/2 - a full size down from my US 91/2/European 42.5 - common wisdom on this thread.  I have a second pair of Stow's which are Kurt Geiger collaboration boot from last year - Stow with a motorcycle toe patch and calf/grain combination leather.  As these were only done in whole sizes, and apparently not on the 4497 last (Richard said it was a special last for the Italian market) I took a size 8 - a bit snug in the toe however definitely wearable.

I had a pair of the beauties above shipped to the States and they arrived yesterday - my first pair on the 4444 last.  I ordered a half size down from my Stow's - size 8.  WOW - what a full fitting last - it is huge!  I now have a size 71/2 on the way to me.  I am a bit nervous as they are a full two sizes down from my US size 91/2.  I recall reading that the difference in length between Trickers sizes is 4mm so the 71/2 should not be that much shorter than the 8.  I am still a bit nervous due to the fact that they will be a size 7/12  - compared to my size 91/2 US.  Has anyone dropped a full size down (instead of 1/2 size) on the move from 4497 to 4444?

I'm an 8 in everything but the 4444 in which I go for 7.5
Guessing 8 1/2 in the 81 last will be too big (however much I want a pair of ebay 8 1/2's for sale!)
Or is it a small last where they suggest sizing up like the "2004 last"

Did you get 'em, the Allan boot in 8.5 mogano shell?? Was thinking about getting them myself but they're gone now. There was a UK 8 Stow in black shell as well but now also gone. 

Tried another pair today - some of the nicest boots I've seen, but I'm starting to think there isn't a fit that suits my feet at all!
