the stitching job is TERRIBLE.

Acceptable on Allen Edmonds, definitely NOT on EG.

How can you tell that it's bad stitching? what demonstrates good stitching?

Perhaps this will be convincing enough - those are ugly ass captoes for your one black shoe, and I don't give a crap if they are EG.

I really, really dislike captoed bluchers. But I like bluchers. In black, my choice for a blucher would be an Alden ptb in shell. My choice for one black shoe would be my old Alfred Sargent OneShoe:

But if I wanted a pair with broguing, as you do, I'd get the AS Hughes. For the same price as a pair of EGs, you'd get leather stiffeners, a fiddleback waist and various personalized features. A slip-on would work well from jeans to tux. Of course, you could also contact DWFII for something bespoke at just a little more than that.

EG Berkeley:

Oxford and restrained brogueing...

I too would rather have the 202 in stead of the 888 in the picture.

No pictures; however I would recommend buying a pair of black wholecut shoes such as Alfred Sargent's Pall Mall or Herring's Chaucer, alternatively you could look at Church's Sawley shoe.

Based on my experience with Sargent they are definitely on my future list, but I will reserve them for one-off styling which will not include a basic black shoe. The EG Berkely may be a winner. I did like the MacKay/Asquith in black 888 and wish they'd fit. I'd be set.

I am missing the point here, can you elaborate on the stitching problem ?

@Bigbris: +1 on Berkeley in 202 or 82, I like also the Cadogan, Canterbury and Asquith.
I would definitely keep away from the one you pictured: derby -> casual, black -> formal: they dont fit the black shoes need (Some may argue the same about the Cadogan: brogue -> casual, I dont know why but they are wrong).
