Booking a room somewhere? You might want to check here first: http://www.bedbugregistry.com/ Also, any location that has either experienced an infestation or has had to exterminate for them is obligated to report this information to the CDC (Centers for Disease Control) and a database is updated on that site.

Bedbugs suck.

A little off topic, but most hotels only change their sheets every 3 days or on request. Even if your spending $300 & up a night, you don't get clean sheets unless you ask for them. Ask

How often do you change them at home?

This is true, and when I found out, I was pretty horrified. They usually give you a little card to put on top of your pillow if you want the sheets changed that day. Always use it.

Pillow case every day-sheets every other day with the exception of 100 degree summer heat when I change them each day. It's not a big deal.

What's the matter with bed bugs, do they transmit illness or poison? Can't you just shake out the sheets?

They come out at night to feed on your blood. They're little f****** vampires. They're very good at hiding, so they know they're despised and hunted. They probably do spread illness of some kind.

They do spread diseases, and that's in addition to biting you which causes itching, etc.

It is my understanding that bedbugs do not transmit diseases, which is one of the reasons why so little is known about them. They're just annoying as hell. A neighbor of mine recently had an infestation, which terrifies me.

THEY DO NOT SPREAD DISEASE. Holy Geronimo, you are wrong.

And bed bugs are ridiculously simple to kill. You don't need to spend thousands on an exterminator. You just buy one of those mattress covers that zip all the way around. The bugs inside the mattress will die off in a matter of months. Those on your sheets will be killed off when you wash them.

Bed bugs are a false panic. Get a fucking mattress cover for $20 and move on with your life.

They don't transmit disease, but the bites itch like crazy and they are a huge pain to get rid of. we had an infestation thanks to our neighbours and it took multiple chemical treatments and two heat treatments to get rid of them all.

edit, we got mattress covers after they were first found, but they don't just nest in the mattress.
