Obenauf's is not pure beeswax, and it ain't a simple mixture (contains lots of things, the propolis in the LP would probably stain the leather brown a little). What I am talking about are pure beeswax (stuff you use for reptile leathers) or a simple beeswax + oil mix (e.g. Seiwa leathercare, etc). But I do agree, just keep wearing your boots and stop worrying about them, like denim their qualities will shine through with age and a bit of care.

Thanks guys, I will obviously continue to wear them, hoping to get that patina back on the Katahdins, but for sure won't ever use the Obenauf on that and most other leathers that I have, but I must say, that on a pair of (relativlely) smooth leather tannish work boots, the slight deepening in the color is fine..and more importantly, hope that the Obenauf does indeed do what it claims and protects and "waterproofs" the leather.
Still will be looking for something that will protect and not stain my other leathers.

Why not just put a little bit on the corner of the ankle and see what it looks like before slathering it all over the boot?

Well, too late for the Katahdins, but good advice anyhow.

LP and their leather oil is pretty hardcore stuff, but keep it far away from dress shoes that you want to keep shiny. I totally "ruined" my $800 pair of barker black shoes with this stuff. The oil sooked into the leather so well that they are all oily and nothing can get it off and they refuse to take any kind of shine. I have soaked them in water, tried acetone, I even tried holding a flame to them. Nothing works. If you are casually wearing boots that don't need a shine this is the stuff to use without a doubt.
