A simple thread to talk about Italian design.... just to start off with: what do you find to be beautiful/unique/special (or uninteresting, borign...) in Italian design?

Simple but stylish, great quality.

Just a tad less flamboyant and tacky than Russian design.

I collect '60s and '70s modern Italian design -- furniture, lighting, accessories. Just love it. Some of my favorite Italian designers from that period are Joe Colombo, Giotto Stoppino, Mario Bellini, and Achille Castiglioni, though there are many other great ones.

I love that period, too, and in particular a designer who started back then, Gaetano Pesce. Speaking of whom, I recently discovered a project of his you might be interested in as a collector. It's called Sessantuna, a series of 61 tables made for Italian furniture make Cassina, to celebrate Italy's 150th unification anniversary. I post a pic here, if you want to know more (I've read they're being auctioned right now) have a look on http://sessantuna.cassina.com

Which takes most of its cues from France and adds an oriental element.

Was walking around my local luxury mall the other day and ran into a furniture place called Jesse. Turns out its Italian design, and I really liked their stuff.

Too bad I can't afford any of it.

Is there such a thing as "signature" Italian (or German or Scandinavian) design anymore? It seems like the lines are so blurred that one can easily resemble another by borrowing design queues that they all seem to share.

Beside the obvious ones such as women and cars
