Help with Sizing - Jackets Never Fit

First time post, thanks in advance for any help.

I'm 6'2" with long legs and normal build. I was always billed as a 42L, but nothing ever fit. I finally bought a Hugo Boss suit that fit well, it was a 40R. But still didn't fit perfectly. This past week in search of a nice but affordable sport coat, I realized that the jackets at Banana Republic and J. Crew that had size 38 chest fit my shoulders (for the most part) perfectly! I felt great in them. I can't believe anybody measured me as 42. BUT... the waist was WAY too small and the arms too short. The arms can be tailored, but the waist is a problem. Even a 40 is a tight fit on the waist. And I'm not overweight or anything (I'm not lanky though). I guess I must have narrow shoulders.

For a straight up blazer or sport coat, I'm probably going to get a 38 and just never button it. But for my suits, that's obviously not an option. I'm kind of disappointed because I love nice jackets, but never have had one that fit really well.

Any advice for me??

Sorry for the long post. Thank you!

Good thing you brought up this year old thread to provide this sage advice.

Thanks gocartgo. This is an old post, but still have the same problem (haven't purchased anything in the last year). This is helpful, I will probably do as you suggest for my next suit. Appreciate the time.

It's gonna be hard nailing an online MTM without experiencing a well-fitting jacket first. Why don't you try jackets with a fuller cut? Or try letting out at the waist... There are many things your tailor can do to tweak the fit. I'd strongly suggest doing that before resorting to online MTM.

Can you post a pic in your best fitting jacket so we can understand what the issue is? It could be something that's minor but really throwing everything else off.
