Car engine jus blew up, thinking of getting a truck, any reccomendations???

Was jsut cruising down 495 to the Cape when the engine in my 00' civic beater exploded, had 193k miles and never had any major repair so I guess I cant complain.

Was getting a new car anyway after the beater died but I am also interested in now getting a truck. I have never owned a truck and dont know shit about them. A friend has an 06' Toyota Tacoma TRD which he loves and reccomended.

I dont want anything to huge, but do want a decent mid-sized bed, AWD, decent gas mileage, 2006+...

The Tacomas seem to be popular, but I don't know much about them. I do know Toyota made decent trucks back in the day, so it's not unreasonable to think they still do.

Similarly-sized American models will be the Chevrolet Colorado and the Ford Ranger. A couple of my friends have Colorados, and they love them. If you want to go Japanese, it might be worth looking at a Nissan Frontier as well.

Other than that, all I can think of are full-size trucks, which are probably bigger than you're thinking.

A few bits of advice, from experience:

- If you can afford it, at least get an extended cab. You don't have to go for a full-on crew cab, but trucks can start feeling pretty cramped with a standard cab. This is particularly true in compact trucks, which is what you seem to prefer.

- Don't get 4wd unless you intend to use it. If you don't have a use for it, it's just added weight (read: poorer gas mileage), more maintenance (both in terms of frequency and cost), and a higher purchase price.

- If you're moving from a Civic to a truck, you're never going to find anything with gas mileage even close to what you get in the Civic. To help mitigate the extra cost try to get something with a six cylinder, which will provide better fuel efficiency than a bigger engine. It will be kind of slow, but, unless you're planning to do a lot of heavy-duty towing, you don't need the extra power from a V8. Also, as mentioned above, avoid 4wd.

thanks for the info, i never realized how expensive truck prices are! I think I may do a 36 month lease for the time instead of buying.

Ford Ranger is a good mid sized truck. The V6 model has decent gas mileage and comes in 4WD.

If you want something a little bigger consider a Ford F-150. They are virtually indestructible.

If I go BMW I am gonna go for the 335 x-drive coupe version, however I cannot decide between the 10 or 11' version, I actually like the 10' body styling quite a bit more but there are only about 10 left in the Northeast.

I think the A5 has been crossed off, the more I saw it in person the less I liked it (same with the A4). I have yet to really check out MB just because I dont really like the styling that much, the front end on the C looks nice but from there back I dont like it. I need to make a decision in the next few weeks.

I can get a 10' 335i coupe x-drive with the prem., cold weather, nav, for around $45k. sticker new on the ones he printed for me was $52.5k with all those options (pretty much fully loaded except for sports pack which comes with those horrible paddles on the steering wheel). There is a $2.5k back on 10's and then a 7% negotiation cushion, so I am thinking $45k is a fair estimate. Really thinking about pulling the trigger.

I may go check out the Cayman (reg. not the S)... other than that I am not sure what else to explore, I do not like the G37 at all.

Ready to get learned?

No to the Porsche Cayman, optioned how I wanted it came out around $75k, not really worht it imo (and much more than I wanted to/can spend). Held off on the 335 because the 2012 complete revamp is coming out early next year = its called being smart. Only other car I am considering atm is S5, but regardless the new plan is to probably get a truck through the upcoming fall/winter and have a build ready for March= again being smart.

If you had read the first post before spewing your garbage you would notice it says "was getting a new car anyway...but now ALSO interested in getting a truck".... lulz

Also wasnt moving on anything until the beater kicked, just ended up lasting longer than I thought.

Tacomas are fine, but since they come in almost identically priced or higher than the Tundra (which is a great full-size truck, definitely the best quality-to-price ratio on the market) I don't really get it.

I had a honda civic that wouldn't die and was wishing that it would so I could justify getting a new car. Neighbor backed his truck up over it early one winter morning when he mistook the gas for the brake.

I'm just wondering if you realize the expenses you will have with these other cars.

By the way my biggest complaint with porsche is the options list. Just make your cars with all the cool stuff already in them and quit nickel and diming us. Thats why I haven't bought a cayman. 90k with all the options. Give me a break.

I'm in a sort of similar situation (looking for a beater truck to drive around in when I don't want to take the fun car). Was looking at Rangers, but have decided I'd be better off with a Jeep Cherokee. May be older than you want since they stopped making them in '01, but the 4.0 is a very reliable engine, the transmissions are good, 4WD, and they have more room to carry passengers than a pickup.

Again, seems like you may want something newer/nicer, but something to consider.

Dont necessarily want something nicer/newer, I would just be using mainly for the few winter months, and then the rest of the year when going camping/vaca or needing to move/pick up shit just want to make sure I get something new enough that I wont have to be dumping $$$ into it. After seeing the cost of trucks, even with mid mileage, I am considering a 3 year lease with the lowest possible mileage option.

so cut back on the porsche options. when day dreaming I can build out a porsche cayman for ~60k.
