The Ultimate "I Drink" Thread - Research Shows Drunks Outlive Abstainers

In honor of all the recent drink/drank/drunk threads, I present to you evidence that drinkers tend to outlive nondrinkers. New research has revealed that abstaining from alcohol increases one's risk of dying relative to both moderate and heavy drinkers!

But a new paper in the journal Alcoholism: Clinical and Experimental Research suggests that - for reasons that aren't entirely clear - abstaining from alcohol does actually tend to increase one's risk of dying even when you exclude former drinkers. The most shocking part? Abstainers' mortality rates are higher than those of heavy drinkers.

So I say "drink to your health," and "a double bourbon and water, please. I've got stuff to live for."

Who's going to be the first to distribute this study during an AA meeting?

Urban legend has it that there was a cardinal lived to be well over a hundred. When asked the secret of his longevity he replied "It is because every day of my life I drank a bottle of red wine. Except when I was feeling under the weather..."

Then added, "On those days I drank two!"

Aren't you 17? A little young to be considering extending your life resorting to alcoholism, eh?
