Curiosity mostly. I'd be interested in knowing how much energy my body needs.

I know you've asked questions about caloric intake and such before. Didn't know if you thought something was wrong.

It's something I'm interested in. Food is a big thing for me, and putting some numbers behind how I've behaved for a long time (which has kept me thin) is just sort of a hobby. I don't invest a massive amount of time in it, it's just yet another thing to keep track of and think about. I like having dozens of little projects to keep track of.

In some people it can be useful to know. One of my friends found out he had a thyroid condition and after we tested him and his RMR was really low. Went to the doctor and got diagnosed.

Isn't that incredibly rare? Fat people always blame their thyroids.

I'm curious about my RMR or BMR or whatever because it seems like no matter what I eat my body doesn't store fat. If I super pig out I might feel a little puffy for like a day and then I eat lightly and feel bad to normal. I'd be interested to see just what my metabolism is (or as close as they can get with one of those breath tests or whatever), and how it changes over time.

I'm not sure it's incredibly rare, but it's not extremely common either. Having thyroid problems is certainly not true of most people who are fat. My friend is only a little overweight and it does seem to be something other members of his family have had to deal with. It's not like he ate normally and had a low metabolic rate, he tended to have low caloric intakes on dietary recalls.

Do you fidget a lot or tend to act very animated? Some of the more recent evidence suggest fat people are very economical in their movements, while skinny people are not. I'm not sure how good the causality is on this though. Your BMR or RMR wouldn't pick up on these kind of differences.

It might just be as you described, one day you eat a lot, next day you eat light and ultimately it's balancing out, so your not gaining weight.

I had a DEXA scan done recently and it took me two weeks to find a clinic in the Dallas area. Cooper Institute supposedly does it, but didn't return phone calls. I finally found an OB-GYN with a scanner and for $75.00 got the scan and several minutes of an MD's time to discuss the results. Google is your friend.
There are lots of places that have the scanners for osteoporosis, but few are using it yet to do body mass composition analysis.
