If you pick it up at the newsstand more than twwice a year its worth it. Plus the archives online are great.

Not a ton. I've read some good articles in The Atlantic, but that was a few years ago. I get most of my commentary from English and German sources.

I stand by what I said, though. Much of the writing in the New Yorker is atrociously convoluted, like that of an precocious undergraduate with a thesaurus and no restraint. In general, I have been less than impressed by the commentary on offer, doubly so when it's inaccessibly written.

my girlfriend's family bought me a subscription because they think i'm pretentious and liberal (probs correct on the first count, incorrect on the second).

one article about contemporary art restoration was absolutely fantastic. other than that, i skimmed the first months of my subscription and didn't even open them after that. boring and pretentious articles about nothing new.

seriously, i've been a subscriber for years. there are things they run that i loathe (anthony lane, much of hte fiction ...) and there are things that i love (atul gawande, rick hertzberg, almost all of their reporting from Iraq/Afghanistan has been superior to anything else i've read). generally, i let them pile up and then read them when i'm on the road. i'll typically find about 2 pieces in every issue that i really enjoy. Given that it's a weekly, that means 8 a month. that's a far better batting average than any other magazine i can think of.
