Short brown hair or very very short gray hair?

This is my current hair style. I've found it necessary to dye the hair because the sides have gone completely gray while the top is still salt & pepper. This looks odd while also making it appear I have a toupee (since the top is so different from the sides). So I dye my hair medium brown. I dress in what would be considered smart-casual (pretty much never a full suit, but dressy shirt and blazer/leather jacket). I've been lifting weights for several months and am definitely noticing changes in my build, but my face is still pretty fat (may change or may not as I get leaner). Will be splurging on wardrobe once I'm happy with my shape. Most of my friends are quite a bit younger than I am, and I live in LA where everyone seems to try to hide their age. I have no problem with gray hair as long as it's "sexy older guy" gray and not "schlumpy old man" gray. I don't think the weird pattern of the gray would matter if it were cut really, really short. Should I leave it short and brown, then attempt to style it a little less "suburban Dad" or get it cut very short (close to buzz cut) and let it go gray? Or even go a lot lighter in shade? BTW: That is not a receding hairline, it has always been that high (even in baby pictures). It sure looks like it's receding, however. I'd love to end up looking like either of these guys from The Sartorialist: (I seem to like the clothes from every street pic he takes in Italy and dislike almost all the rest)

Don't dye your hair. You won't look younger, you'll only look like a man with dyed hair .

That is dyed hair, and I don't think it looks unnatural.

Do you?

I like how it looks. Always go lighter when you get older. You have the rest of your life to be close cropped.

I'm not saying it looks bad, I just think there's nothing wrong with having grey hair. I prefer a natural look anytime, it looks more manly and mature to me. Think George Clooney. So I'd go for a short cut. But that's just my opinion.

I think you shouldn't buzz your hair if you still have a good head of hair to begin with. So if you're aiming for a haircut I'd suggest the second example. The guy in the first photo has a chiseled looking face, and so the shaved head suits him.

^^^This. Don't buzz it since you still have a full head of hair, but also don't dye it.

As I said in the OP, keeping the hair and letting it go gray isn't really an option because of the bizarre pattern the gray grows in. It looks bad enough at its current length, but it really looks like crap if it grows any longer.

Then buzz away! I wouldn't dye it.

OK, so opinion seems divided. Any more input?

I'm gonna be the bad guy here and say the toupet look is also due to your (non-)receding hairline and slight combover. You have a semi-toupet look from the front with dyed hair.

Perhaps a better haircut would fix that.

Definitely cut it shorter (maybe a four or a five, even a six on top, 1.5 on the sides). It will still be long enough to dye. You definitely don't need a full on buzz just yet. I agree with CDFS, trying to hide your hair gives it that toupee look. I also have a "high" hairline and have tried to hide it with mixed results.

Never thought it would look like I was trying to hide baldness, as I'd have long-ass bangs combed straight down over my forehead if I were trying to cover something up.

I guess I could try something in between a complete buzzcut and the current length.
