Some of the customers are indeed idiots or schmucks. But aside from the crooks who deserve everything coming to them, try to be a little forgiving, if only for your own mental well-being.

Would have inquired more about this mans situation and what he was trying to accomplish to know what direction to go. If he is legit and sincere I would suggest an experiment. Would say "Let's try your jacket on and a couple other sizes and you tell me what you see and what you like/prefer". What you see on the man and what he sees in the mirror is not the same. It's an education/learning opportunity but first you have to connect with him by your inquiring about his situation. Selling is not about you or me but about what your client wants. The young guy with the rope at his waist did not come to you for a suit for his new job in finance, he wants to fit in with his peers. Are you doing him a disservice? He will look back in 5 years and either blush or embrace that look from his youth but that was his choice. We have all done something like that.
Don't get me wrong, people do buy and want the wrong thing but unless they ask for guidance they are not ready to listen. End the sale with a disclaimer that removes all responsibility from you.

The husband didn't want a new suit and she said he must buy a new one because his current suit wasn't so current anymore. He succumbed and I brought out a few suits for him to consider along with some shirts and ties, etc. He still wasn't keen on the idea of having to buy a new suit but his wife INSISTED that he does. After approximately 45 minutes, he finally decided on one that he liked"”along with a new shirt and new tie and all other accessories"”and he said to me, "I like THIS one. I'll take all this. Wrap it up." His wife then said, "Well, honey, you can't buy from the first store we go to. We should shop around some more." She then grabbed him by the arm and they both left. I never saw them again.
I predict a divorce in their future.

Given that he didn't buy from you, I'm hoping he finally put his foot down and bought nothing ... and then wore his old suit to her embarrassment.

This was my favorite of your stories. It seems to me that with the right editor you could have a book in your future ... Confessions of a Clothing Salesman. I want an autographed copy.

I really don't see what Suitmyself has said, or said he said, that is so wrong or provokes such reactions.

Don't listen to the haters SuitMyself. These stories are surprisingly entertaining. The stupidity of some people never ceases to amaze me.
