  • Grandfather's Bulova. My father, aunt, and uncle gave him and my grandmother watches for their 50th wedding anniversary. I've got it in rotation with my other watches.
  • Monogrammed face towel and wash cloth that belonged to my grandmother. Never used.
  • Ceramic mug that my great-grandfather used as a shaving mug. I use it when I have time for brush-and-soap shave.
  • Pen that belonged to my great-grandfather's brother. He was a country doctor who got into a lot of trouble when he told a neighbor lady who was plucking a chicken not to forget the tail feathers. That's how long ago he lived. It's the dip-in-ink kind and stays in my safe-deposit box.

This stuff is all in my will to go to my brother's daughter, who is the next blood descendant in the family. I'm also going to give her the first Rolex I ever bought and a pretty nice glass mug with the family crest on it.

Last winter my grandfather gave me his old coat. Here's the story behind it: It's a hand-tailored cashmere jacket made in Vienna that he bought when he moved to the USA over 40 years ago. It's a beautiful jacket, but my grandfather was kind of fat and stubby when he bought it, so I just picked it up from my tailor yesterday after extensive work. I had to have six inches taken off the waist and the sleeves extended about an inch, but now it fits beautifully. I'm also excited to see camel coats coming back into style this season (e.g.), so I the jacket will fit right in.

I have an antique Benrus watch, which was my grandfather's. It's surprisingly in good shape, given the amount of time he has owned it.
