By a real job I meant a steady position at a company you work for day-to-day.

Rarely have I met people that do the latter. Consulting is simply too expensive to pay someone to do routine stuff.

Like anything else there are different tiers of consulting firms.

Thanks for the tips/advice.

Are there any free VM suites? I use OS X if it matters. I can dual boot my computer but I do have 7 on it.

Any suggestions for switches and routers? I'm not terribly fond of spending money but if its beneficial then I'll look into it. Another issue would be set up location and power. I connect to the internet wirelessly.

I'll read through again to pick up on points previously missed.
