Is coffee a really bad idea after a workout - Page 2

Drink coffee whenever you want. Since when did this become an issue? Hell, I've drunk coffee during my workouts before. Never bothered my ass.

Better before a workout. Can't hurt after a workout unless you're caffeine sensitive and it impacts your sleep habits. (I have a hard time falling to sleep if I have caffeine after noon.)

Have coffee anytime you want. It can be useful before a workout.

I would just like to announce that due in no small part to the responses in this thread I am now drinking a cup of coffee.

Do you go to sleep at 4 pm or something?

Nope, 1 or 2 am. Just more sensitive to caffeine than most people. I only drink Starbucks if I'm traveling (jet lag), it's too strong for everyday use.

There's also the fact that caffeine (more than a tiny bit) interferes with absorption of certain nutrients that one probably should get from food or supplements soon after a workout.

I don't see how it would matter in the grand scheme of things.

The only thing i'm aware of caffiene doing, is slowing down iron uptake.

But really, unless you're a serious performance athlete i wouldn't worry about it at all.

I had the same question a few months back. After scouring the first 5 pages of a google query there seems to be evidence or at least common belief in the ideas that caffeine:

a) May increase glycogen production post work out
b) May decrease recovery time and reduce muscle soreness
c) Almost definitely interferes with your bodies ability to absorb certain nutrients. I'm not sure if applies to macro-nutrients like protein, but it seems somewhat unlikely

It's probably a crapshoot either way. Try it with caffeine, and then try it without. If you don't notice a significant difference than their probably is none.

Coffee before a workout is a bad idea. It can elevate heart rate for hours.

Are you serious? 200mg of caffeine is the single best thing you can have before you lift.
