Indianapolis-- eat at Recess.
While in Indianapolis have lunch at Goose Market at 25th and Delaware. I recommend the Batalli sandwich. For dinner there are several good options: Recess, Oakley's (farther north on 86th and Ditch Rd.), R Bistro, St. Elmo's just to name a few. Enjoy your visit. Beware that it's hot here right now.

In St. Louis, eat at "Pappy's". It is the best BBQ in town.

here is the plan -

evening drive to springfield,

morning go to ill state fair, then have barbeque at doctor of barbeque
evening go to st louis
morning, arch, city museum, lunch with friends at crown candy kitchen or pappy's barbeque
visit st louis mounds, start driving east towards luisville, stop for dinner in henderson for barbeque, sleep in luisville

morning go to frazier history musem, then kentuky state fair, start driving to indy, gray brothers cafeteria in moorseville

wake up, go to indy kids museum, then indiana state fair, start driving home.

open to suggestions

You should eat somewhere in Indy. Moreso than Springfield or Louisville. Will you have your kids w/ you? I assume so b/c of the Children's Museum. If you do, take a lunch at Shapiro's. It really is quite good, but not a sit-down place or fancy dinner so there'd be no issue taking the kids.

It's been years, and years, and years since I stopped in St. Louis, but dinner theatre at one of the moored river boats. Also, did you have a tour of the beer factory in your list?

good point - I have a pretty good deli not far from my home, do you think that shapiro's is substantially better?

what about the cafeteria that I mentioned? know anything about it?

anything else really suggested in indy?

yes, with kids.
