New Car - 3M Paint Protection Film?

I just brought a brand new honda civic and am looking to get a few accessories like a bug deflector (mainly for looks) and window tints.

I've heard people talk about getting 3M film to protect the front of the car from rock chips. Is it worth getting the bumper/hood/side mirrors done? Just the front bumper? Any comments would be appreciated.

It works, if that's the question. I wouldn't spend the money for a Honda Civic, but up to you.

3m film is a good idea but we are talking about a honda civic.

Tint and bug deflectors? Do you live in the ghetto?

What's wrong with tint? It keeps the car cool and keeps eyes off crap you have inside.

Waste of money, for numerous reasons. How much does your shop charge to apply the film?

All the things you mentioned is what the local home invaders/theives have on there cars.

How are bug deflectors in any way related to thieves and living in a ghetto? I have them on some of my cars (hood deflectors - I'm assuming they're the same thing) and they're quite good at protecting the finish against stone chips. It's only annoying when I have to take them off the cars before I wash them. While I have no experience with the 3M product I've heard that over time they do yellow. If you have a white or light colour car maybe you should take that into consideration. Also, the film is more worthwhile if you will be doing a lot of highway driving.

Why would you take it off? I thought it was like a permanent part of the car once it's attached? Aren't they supposed to be slightly raise off the hood so water can drain from behind it?

BTW - is it easy to take them off and put them on? I saw one online for cheap and it says you use the existing holes drilled under the hood of the civic. Is this something I can do myself assuming I'm not at all handy? I just don't want to damage anything, and I can't seem to find a demonstration of how easy/hard it really is.

I just did some calling around, I can get the window tints down for $265 and just the 3m for the bumper for $300 (the full package is like $600 and way too much money for me.) I think I for sure want the tints... maybe the 3m on the bumper. My old car's bumper is pretty badly pitted after 8 years of driving it on a blend of city roads and highway if thats any indication.

From what I've seen it's usually best not to leave bug deflectors on year round. As the car fades the paint behind the bug deflector will not. It may not be like this anymore. That's just how it was "back in the day".

People around here put them on during heavy bug season and then take them off.

Tinting your windows is just begging to get pulled over. Even if the tint is "legal" it's often just the reasonable suspicion a cop needs to take you to the side of the road and then start raping you with his baton. It's not worth it.

I have a 35% tint that looks darker than it actually is because I have a black car and I have never been pulled over before. Many of my friends have 20% tints and have never been pulled over for anything other than speeding. And this is all in NY. No front plate gets more cop attention than tints IME

What the hell is wrong with tint? Seriously, you guys are weird. Fidel - call around and get several quotes. Make sure its got a rock solid warranty in case of bubbling or shitty installation.

x2

And $265 is way too much. It should be well under $200. I've never paid more than $150 to tint any car that I've owned.
