i think its more texture i know that

The Orange one is MATT and resonably strong, ok for short- medium probally better for longer to create effect
and the Blue one FREEZE Pitch is Stronger(much) but not as matt. I feel that this one is better for shorter- medium hair well for what i use.
I havn't used any of the others as they are for extremly long hair/ curling etc

If it matters, I find it much stronger/better than the purple GW, which is in turn a lot better than American Crew Fiber (by a long shot).

ONE MORE QUESTION: I still need to rearrange my hair every now and then due to a stray hair that'll pop up. Should I be looking for some type of firming/holding spray? What's cheap but good that you recommend, if yes?

Most people use hairspray after they have styled esp after gatsby i feel that its fairly product heavy? maybe thats just me. I use goldwell 10 dollar can and the swatskoft however u spell it its the one with the 25% extra for everyday use. Then i use OSIS i can't remember the bottle but its alot more exp but its alot stronger use that for liek more important days

It's kind of junk though. I recommend Shiseido Design Tex 06

Similar consistency to the purple gatsby shit but stickier, comes out well in the shower and lasts all day. My favorite stuff by far - my hair is a bit longer than yours though and I wear it down, so I'm really not sure how it would work on short hair. But I used to use the Gatsby grey and purple stuff, so take it that advice for what it's worth.

Grey Gatsby is my favorite but I haven't been able to find it stateside anymore... what's something that has a really similar consistency (and dryness)?

Also on board with grey gatsby It's got a decent hold (not sticky .. best way to describe it is like when you iron a shirt and the shirt holds the lines). Gives you a really good matte finish too. I actually bought all the gatsbys and treid them out. My observations:

1. Green - works great for details. I was into doing japanese style crazy hair for a while and i used this for the crown of my head and some details work. Nice consistency, not too sticky, and more of a matte finish
2. Grey - My fave. Ultra matte finish and not stickey (think grungy hair). This stuff works better when I have short hair or want to do some details in the hair (see green). It actually gets even better after about 6-8 hours of wearing it, as you can mold it and play with it more and it still holds whatever you throw at it.
3. Purple and Orange - These feel way to 'greezy'. I tried with short and long hair and didn't like the results.
5. Blue - Works great for medium/long, as it gives your hair the wet look with very very light hold. Does nothing for short hair.

I think I'm missing one.

Grey Gatsby is also a great product for after a shampoo because the buildup stays with you and make the hair manageable as if you have gone 3 days without washing.

Finish off with hairspray for hold after you're done styling. For gatsby, pink and gray are stronger for sculpting if you're still dissatisfied with purple.
