My Mother Has Gone Native!

My mother, who is somewhat well known in this county (Santa Cruz) and regarded as a fascist (she is a centrist Democrat), has always held herself apart from the libs around here who so tormented her in her past life. She wore their scorn as a badge of honor, in the defiant words of Dan Quayle. Well, today we went to Whole Foods in Capitola and, like a hippie eco-green killjoy epigone, she ... brought in her own empty canvas grocery bags!! WTF? I was incredulous. I asked her what on earth she was doing. Had she become a green without me noticing? No. It was peer pressure, pure and simple. Shame. She could no longer stand the dirty looks and snide comments of the cashiers and especially of the other granola patrons. They wore her down. What's next? Will she become a block captain?

I know those dirty looks from the cashiers. In turn, I went out and bought a giant $300 canvas bag to bring my groceries home in and now all of those sandal hippies are jealous of me.

I have acquired several fine bottles of tequila at Albertson's in SC. I did not bring my own bag.

Wow thats crazy...over here we don't even use them. At least I've never seen them in use and I frequent Whole Foods. canvas shopping bags that is.

Everyone should be using canvas shopping bags. She should get something mildly offensive screen printed on it.

When we remember we use Canvas bags. It cuts down on the build up of those really sturdy whole foods paper bags (will sometimes have 6 or 7 of them piled up in the foyer...) and saving 5 cents is just the icing on the cake.

I have a few giant Sam's Club bags. They are awesome. Huge, sturdy, and well-constructed, I can carry a week's worth of groceries plus 3 months' worth of toothpaste or soap or deodorant in just two bags. What's even better is the rush of knowing that even as I am saving the environment, I am crushing American labor.

No canvas bags for me, just can't care enough. I always get plastic.
