I would only consider wearing balmoral wingtips such as the McClain with jeans if my jeans were slim, and ideally slim and tapered. But if you are skinny to start with, it should work with even straight leg jeans.

I prefer straight legged jeans and am about 34~35 in the waist, so my choice is the Polo/C&J Darlton/Marlow - like cheesecake is wearing in the pictures above.

So what exactly are the guidelines that inform which type of pants to wear and whatnot?-

There are no "guidelines" - I just personally prefer that my shoes be congruent with the size of my hem and formality of the fabric.

So, the wider the hem and more informal the fabric, the more I tend to a heavier looking shoe. The narrower the hem, the more formal the fabric, the more I tend to a more sleeker shoe.

i.e. there's a reason bootcut jeans are called "boot cut"

A well worn v-cleat florsheim would be good in brown. If I could find a pair in good shape, I would be all over it.
