Drink, be merry and stay lean?

Continued from the Intermittent Fasting thread I started a few days ago; I have been doing a lot of reading on the leangains site and came across an article on drinking. Like most other 20 year olds my age, I do enjoy the occasional beverage or 10 You always read around on how detrimental our certain habbits of this nature is a bad thing for our body composition. Howeverrrrr....reading this article on the truth about alcohol and fat loss it seems we can have our beer and drink it too! Any opinions on this? Reading through the comments at the bottom and the article itself, it seems that the author of the site has maintained that crazy physique even whilst indulging. What do you guys reckon? I'm going to give it a shot this weekend!

That's a pretty good little survey.

I asked this very question a few months ago and the user Why provided an answer that hit some of those points.

Anecdotally, I drink quite a bit and the calories just do not seem to stick on me. The article puts the thermogenic effect at something like a 20% reduction vs. the stated calories on the label. When Ive gotten on Fitday and tracked my total consumption over the course of several weeks, it almost seems like the booze just doesn't count at all. I could be underestimating my calories from food, or my BMR, but it just doesnt make sense when I compute that I should be ingesting 3-5 thousand calories per week just from booze.

Besides this, I have been experimenting with drinks that have the least calories. Lemon vodka and soda water with a lime is pretty good....

I think in order to restrict caloric intake from alcohol, I'll just have to do shots from now on!

Good stuff. It's very interesting knowing this sort of thing. Gotta skip the late night McDonald's feast now.

My Dad always told me you can drink as much wine as you want and not get fat, but if you drink beer you will get fat.

As always it's always been net energy intake. If you manage to burn more than you consume you are in good shape.

Haha not sure how true that is...

Why do you take information from that site and post questions here? The best person that could answer your questions is the author, if you take his research and ask at other places, you're going to get different (uneducated) answers. I doubt anybody here is an expert on alcohol and the way it interacts physiologically with the body when it comes to weight gain and loss and different varieties of it. I think if you're going to drink-just drink but if health is on your mind, don't drink as much.
