Did My First Open Mic Stand Up Routine

This evening. The room was almost entirely other comics (not that I consider myself a comic). They pull your name out of a fish bowl and you go. I did better than others, worse than some, managed to insult a gay guy, and fortunately kept myself from fainting. The toughest part was telling the punchline of a bit I thought would be side splitting, only to met with crossed arms and cold stares. Tough to trudge forward when your ego is yearning for acceptance from strangers and they hold back the love. Eye opening. I'll try it again, I just need to throw out the stuff than wasn't deemed funny (75%) and come up with hilarious witticisms and observations about life. Anyone else do stand up?

Thanks so much for your kind words. You can do it, believe me. I'm the shyest guy I know.

Video...some day when people actually laugh at my stuff.

Good for you! Its a thrill isn't it? I've done it a few times. Gotten offers to do it on a regular basis but I find it boring to do the same routine over and over and over and over and over.....I've just bullshitted about current events and people in the audience. Nothing like making a whole room full of people laugh.

Never done it. would be nervous as hell......

I haven't had that experience yet, but I bet it's great when it happens.

i've done this several times recently.... i've always been a funny guy, and through my own research i found out that my mind....sort of understands comedy naturally the way that real comedians do. so i tried it. i've never bombed. great material still comes to me on a daily basis. but i haven't gone back. i think i ended up realizing that i really don't care to make other people laugh. i just like to make myself laugh. it's great fun, though.

I think a good stand-up depends so much on the crowd. I've been to a lot of stand-ups where people just the boo the comics off the stage while I find his jokes quite funny. I hate rude crowds though.

There's a great documentary by Jamie Kennedy called "Heckler", its worth watching if you ever have a couple of hours to kill.

That takes a lot of guts. Good for you!

Audiences don't realize how difficult it is to be on stage trying to get them to laugh. I've heard Bill Hicks recordings where the audience is uncomfortably silent throughout.

This one got a good response but has a very limited shelf life. "Anybody see that Youtube video where Justin Bieber is on stage and he gets pegged in the head with a partially filled water bottle? (pause) ......Ahhhhhhhh HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!"

Good on you That's something I've always toyed with doing but have always been satisfied enough with making stupid jokes on the Internet and with my friends. I would never want to make myself that vulnerable, especially considering the majority of people have a boring sense of humor and they would be the ones judging me.
