Visiting Toronto/Montreal/Ottawa at Christmas?

I got a buddy who just moved to Toronto and I'm thinking of taking a week off to go visit him at Christmas time. I've never been there so I want to do the touristy stuff, and would like to road trip it to Ottawa and Montreal if possible.

Is visiting Toronto in winter a dumb idea? Will I be snowed in and unable to walk around most of the time? Is public transport an option, or do I need a car to go anywhere?

Its cold during that time and the snow is not that bad. If you do go to Montreal make sure to go to schwartz deli.

Montreal and Ottawa aren't very close to Toronto. Add a couple of travel half-days if you want to head east.

I wouldn't bother with Ottawa, not that it is a bad place.

If you're coming to Toronto around the holidays, the snow and the cold aren't at their worst. Snow days don't appear until the new year especially around February.

If driving, expect to come to the realization that drivers seem to have never seen or driven in snow before.

I think Montreal and Ottawa are much colder (due to lake effect?).

if you come to ottawa, make sure to visit the rideau canal for some skating

also see if you can get tickets for leafs or canadiens hockey game


oh and public transportation is fine i guess

Toronto at Christmas is a great idea - much milder than Edmonton. School's out, and the entertainment district will be rocking. Within the vicinity, there's Niagara on the Lake and Niagara Falls too.

Also...maybe you'd want to schedule some time with local headhunters and get a feel for the local job market. That time of the year they'll have nothing to do anyway.

Montreal is doable if you fly via Porter. Don't drive - too much hassle.

Toronto 'round Christmas time is nice. If you've only got a week, I'd probably reconsider trying to jam three cities in - unless you're cool not "soaking up" your surrounding culture.

I like living in toronto, but don't understand why anyone would want to vacation here.
