I usually wear wool trousers with a BB dress shirt to work but need a coat that can withstand Colorado winters. I was thinking of a pea coat but don't really like the double breasted look. I found a couple coats from sterlingwear that I like. Which of these two would be more appropriate for business casual? I am afraid the longer one may be a little too much, I am 26 in an office with people mostly my age or younger. http://www.sterlingwear.com/cart/ind...id=23&parent=1 or http://www.sterlingwear.com/cart/ind...id=20&parent=1 And what color would go best, black or gray?

I like the second one. Personally, I prefer a charcoal color to black. But in this case I might say black would be a better option than gray. And get it in 100% wool or wool/cashmere. Skip the nylon.

Get a shearling.

Do you (or anyone else) know if the gray is perhaps darker, even charcoal? Since if so... that seems like a good option.

I would suggest a longer coat, then. Something like these, perhaps. Or a duffel coat, if you like the look - the hood is great in the winter. Or a full-length bridge coat, but those are generally double-breasted.

Gray is more versatile. Black can be a little harsh looking. - Mike

A dark grey or charcoal would be best in my opinion. Try to inquire within the website to see if they can provide a picture for you or atleast a good description.

I like the first one in navy or the second in grey. I think both are appropriate for business casual. I would also spend a bit more to avoid synthetics.

Can anyone comment on the quality of Adam of London? This is the first I have seen of them.

I haven't used them. I ordered an overcoat from Bookster instead, which is highly regarded on these fora. You can select just about any fabric you want - bulletproof tweed, covert cloth, suit fabric, etc.

I compiled a list of overcoat stores when I was researching - you might find it helpful:

Jos. A. Bank is probably the cheapest, provided you get a sale price. I ordered a topcoat from them, but the sizing didn't work out. (The coat was made in Haiti, of all places!)

For cold-to-very-cold weather, I wear a navy-surplus bridge coat bought on Ebay. The wool on it completely blocks all wind. For the very, very coldest days (-30C), I wear an Orvis loden shooting coat, and abandon any look of formality. It is incredibly warm!

Everybody is hating on the wool/nylon blend but my understanding from the MASSIVE sterlingwear threads in SW&D is that the nylon is a preferred component of the peacoats but maybe there is no good reason for that (and the black is 100% wool)

All my coats are 100% natural, but in some cases the liner is synthetic. I don't know if this is what they mean by 80/20 but I would avoid synthetic liners. They make you sweat.

Gray instead of black. The second jacket looks more structured and authoritative, making it probably a better choice. (Looking more mature rarely is a bad thing.) However, the materials don't seem particularly good, and who knows if the jacket will be warm enough. That is one case where trying on before buying is almost mandatory.
