How would you match this jacket?

Every now and then I see vintage jackets like this one (with a fairly large black and white houndstooth), and I like them as odd pieces. But it's not clear to me what I would wear with the jacket, so I never buy one.

How would you build an outfit with this? Or not as the case may be.

Thanks!

I wouldn't so much match the jacket as light a match to it but if I had to, charcoal or chocolate wool pants

Okay. Maybe it's uglier than I thought.

For some reason, I always thought there had to be some interesting outfit to build around it...but maybe it's only for old men in Palm Springs/Beach.

Check out the movie "Bugsy", with Warren Beatty. He wears a lot of stuff similar to this coat. So I guess it's a 1940's look. The lapels are too wide for my taste.

I know this will seem unsavory, but for compex patterns like that , which I also have difficulty working with, I cheat and look at Carlo Franco's ebay site and try and find something close.

I don't know who puts his outfits in the ads together but they are amazing and elegant. There is an Oxxford brown plaid coat with a patterned shirt and tie and it looks stunning.

I would cheat and look for something close to get ideas. There was also a clever outfit in one of flussers books where he has the houndstooth pattern and varies the sizes between the tie , jacket and shirt that looks nice.

Thanks for the ideas. It was just a Kiton cashmere number I saw on ebay, but it's probably been bid up past my interest level already.

There were a couple of other jackets I liked though...

A Hickey Freeman lambswool for $30:

An Irish tweed hacking jacket for 50 pounds:

And a vicuna blazer for $130:

I'm pretty sure I can figure out how to match that last one myself.

The blue shirt that is shown works well with grey or charcoal pants, and perhaps brown shoes. It's a classic tweed and should be albe to fit into most wardrobes.
