How to frame a bunch of small items in one frame

Thread Starter
I have a bunch (40 or so) of old cigarette cards.
They're pretty small, maybe 1"x 2", I'd like to frame them all in one big frame.

Making the frame is not problem, but I'm having trouble on figuring out how to mount them.
I'd like to mount them on white mat, evenly spaced, with a border.
I can't permanently affix them to the mat, and I don't really want to spend hours with a ruler figuring out where to put them.

Is there any technique/shortcut for this?

Take it to a memorabilia shop, they have mitred mount cutters just for this kind of thing. He might charge you $40 for it, but at least someone else is doing the work.

I'll put in another recommendation for taking the work to a professional framer or memorabilia shop. It's a lot of work getting something matted just right, let alone 40 somethings. Just let them know that you need it done without damaging the cards or mounting them in a non-reversible way. It may be expensive (I paid $100 for a plain shadow box with two items double matted), but it's the best way to get it done right.
