I just realized that I'm in the styleforum asking for travel tips. You all know I just want to know where the great shops are, right?

I've done the LA-Vancouver trip a couple of times. If I were you, I would go down 5 to Yreka and drive out to the California coast there. 5 through Oregon is nice - and you could do something like catch a show in Ashland or check out Mt. Shasta, but it gets boring South of the California border. There are some great breweries on the California coast, amazing beaches, and interesting little towns. I will also set you up to drive through wine country without going too far out of your way.

A shop in San Francisco that doesn't get much mention here but that I love is Unionmade in the Castro.

For food, if you can splurge a bit then I would suggest Manresa in Los Gatos. Best meal I've ever had.

Oh, and visit Hearst Castle. It's cheesy as hell, but architecturally and historically fascinating.

Don't forget the Stumbling Monk (for beer) and Tillikum Place Cafe for a brunch-gasm.
