If not Aldens, then ... What?

I need to buy a couple of plain and cap-toe black oxfords but can't spend more than about $500 per pair. I like the Aldens but they are a little ... unexciting. But what are the alternatives? Is there anything made as well as Aldens but with a bit sexier styling while staying in that price range?

Not interested in Italian shoes .....

Tell us what would be more "exciting" in your eyes, and it will be easier to steer you in the right direction.

On a smaller budget, I'm having silimar issues with Allen Edmunds... I'm contemplating Loake or possibly even stretching for Church's via those UK websites...

Something sleeker with more of a waist.

Something from C&J or AS may have a more elegant last and be around that price point. Otherwise you could look into some of the more heavily styled Italian brands like Sutor, which you can get under $500 through some forum partners like Shop the Finest.

What do you mean by "unexciting?" That would be a valuable explanation to give. Have you considered Allen Edmonds or scrapping a little more money together for something custom made?

I'll come out and say it: I don't understand why feet should need a heavily suppressed waist. Jackets have a suppressed waist to emphasize thin-ness and breadth of chest. Are we trying to subtly indicate to the opposite sex that we have narrow arches and broad toes, and therefore will make fertile partners?

I think he means less conservative... Probably something in between Ferragamo and Mezlan, if such a shoe exists...

I'd try C&J through Pediwear. Pricing is usually just a touch lower than Aldens through regular channels.

I have the C&J Connaught in black and think they look nice. Very, very comfortable too (for my feet, anyway.) Too bad they don't come in dark brown. As noted, they can be had online from Pediwear.

Because it is more attractive.
