having a friend in her 30s die of cancer last year, and us having to go through with my mother in law's battle with it sickens me that people do this.... well she had a malignant tumor in her breast which means she is a probable candidate for cancer in the future if left unchecked. that would be karmic. (not wishing her to have cancer)

Another grad student in my department faked having ovarian cancer, claimed to be flying to New York for treatment. The charade ended when someone posted pictures on Facebook of her at the beach in South Carolina when she was supposedly having radiation and chemo in New York somewhere. Got in trouble with her boss, he didn't kick her out but made her teach for the rest of her time there. Not sure if she ever graduated. Really a terrible thing to do, she was crazy. Got married and divorced twice in grad school too.

I feel like its one thing to claim cancer to get some time off work or school, but its another to tell everyone you have cancer, and then start a charity organization that raises over $30,000 to be donated to a cancer research program at a university in Alberta and stealing that money. She apparently claims she did it because she wanted to feel like people cared about her.

The funny thing is the whole time she had people caring about her in droves. If she had just donated the money to the university like she said she would then it wouldnt have been so bad. In fact, it would have been a fairly positive experience if everyones donations actually did something positive. Instead she took all their money as well as their love and support and fucked them all over.

She was actually getting paid to go to school, so she pretty much stole $20,000 plus whatever value you want to give a tuition waiver.

Certainly stealing donations is worse, but still pretty slimy either way.
