"Sockeye" is a Pacific salmon variety, generally judged to be second best to the chinook or king salmon. however, some people who really know salmon argue that sockeye is better than king.

I prefer sockeye to king because of the color and flavor.

My friend just got back from working on a fishing boat in Alaska, where he and two others on the boat caught 128,000 lbs of salmon. They sold it for 0.96 a lb. Even though there's a lot of overhead, that's not bad for 6 weeks' work and you come back looking like you had the best personal trainer work you hard for a year.

I remember seeing this program about the king crab boats in the Bering sea where they work twenty two hour shifts back to back or something equally insane, and even a broken leg didn't stop a guy carrying on...

My friend is not exposed to the same conditions as these guys - he's basically at the mouth of a river before the fish go upstream to spawn. Of course, there's dangers to that, but not nearly as bad as being on the Bering Sea during wintertime!

Fishing trip couple years back, of the West Coast of BC and close to Alaska.

Langara Island, Great trip.

Brought back 345 pounds of fresh salmon, 100 pounds of Halibut and 50 pounds of Rockfish.

The salmon was sockeye, king and chinook. Majority being chinook.

Wont eat fresher fish than this... phenomenal.

Great trip for some one that loves fishing, highly recommended.
